In January I received a tax code for next year which included a deduction for £664.63 tax underpaid in a previous year.

I rang the tax office and asked which year it related to and was told 2005/2006, so I asked for an assessment to show how that had arisen.

No assessment was forthcoming, but this week I received a fresh code which makes no mention of the underpayment.

So it is well worth checking your code. Without doing so I would have ended up paying over £650 too much tax next year.
