Thank you Pam, I guessed that was the reason but needing somebody with knowledge to reinforce my thoughts. I am sure he knows the reason but he needs all the encouragement he can get.

Hi Ann
It is good for teachers to get experience of other ages, especially finding out how children's learning develops from the very early stages at school. Much of the knowledge he gains will be aplicable ( with minor changes) for juniors and it can also help when he is faced with children who are learning at a slower pace than the rest of the class.

When doing teacher training, especially in primary, you need to have a range of placements in all key stages. I did a few days in nursery, 6 weeks in Year 1, 6 weeks in Year 5 and 10 weeks in Year 2. I now teach Year 4.

When getting primary QTS you have to have taught different year groups even if you would like to teach a particular key stage at the end of it.

I teach at a primary school and could be moved into any year group, so I need to be prepared!

I thought that was probably the answer Ginny thanks. He really doesn't enjoy working with such young children so is not looking forward to it at all.

Can anyone who knows about teacher training and placements answer a query for me please? My Grandson is in his second year of Uni training to be a teacher of Junior school children, he says the older ones. Does it work like that?

If so, and I am sure there is a logical reason, can anyone explain why his next placement of five weeks is in a primary school reception class (i.e. infant). How can his training be applicable to this age group when he is specialising in science for 10/11 year olds?
