Dear Beloved,
My name is Mr. Thomas James, I am from Portugal.
I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone (not even myself)but my business.Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it.Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as few close friends .
I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give to charity organizations and those in Need, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have Distributed money to some charity organizations when I was well. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in United States, Asia, Middle East & Europe, they refused and kept the money to themselves.Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of Ten Million United States Dollars ($10, 000, 000.00) that I have with an Asset Management / Vaulting Company Abroad.
I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatch it to charity organizations and use it to help those in Need.N/B:Kindly note that 25% of this funds must go to victims of Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina , Hurricane Wilma and South Asia Earthquake , 55% to other Charity Organizations around the World and 20% for your effort and time.
I cannot talk with you on the phone due to my health situation, as I am using my Lap Top Computer to communicate with you. You should respond to this e-mail if you are interested in carrying out this assignment on my behalf. God be with you. Mr. Thomas James
REPLY
Dear Mr. James,
I am so sorry to hear of your severe medical condition. I appreciate your desire to benefit charities once you have departed this world.
I would like you to donate directly to the following charities without my commission which I really don't need.
Multiple Sclerosis Research UK The British Heart Foundation Association Of The Children For The Children Guatemala UNICEF India
I look forward to your confirmation that you will arrange this and the amounts you have donated. I will then publish your details and ensure that the Portugese Embassies and Consulates in each Country are advised enabling them to thank you personally.
Yours
I have a feeling I might be deafened by the silence!

Oh, Sue, you are brave to respond. I have been tempted to answer these stupid emails but I haven't so far as I don't want to be swamped by replies.
Let us know if Mr James does donate the funds, but I won't hold my breath!

Hi Supercrutch
Don't open this type of mail and respond. Two things can happen:
It can activate a virus on your pc which sometimes stays inactive for several weeks - or when a specific program is opened.
and / or Your email account can often be added to a phishing list which is sold to other scamsters.
Worth checking your antivirus is up-to-date.

My safeguards are all in place, they run 24/7 in the background (trusting aren't I?)
I picked this one out of my dump file cos I was looking for something to do in between digging someone up who was being elusive and trying to find a blasted death!

Shame, shame on that cancer -- defiling all forms of medical treatment. Surely it should be required to make honest treatments of them now!
Viruses are not spread by email. They are spread by attachments sent by email, which doesn't happen unless the attachment is opened. (The risk of code in an email message itself infecting a computer is now minimal due to the features of most email software.)
I can't find my favourite original scam-the-scammers website anymore, but there are loads of them around and they can make for hilarious reading. Google "419 scammers" or "lads from lagos" -- aha, I think this may be the one I read years ago:
http://www.scamorama.com/
There are monthly featured scammers and the scambaiters they had the bad luck to meet. For instance:
http://www.scamorama.com/eliza_dane_godson.html DECEMBER 2009 I AM NOT HEAR FOR A JOKE OK - Eliza Dane brings us Milo Minderbinder's Passport of Shame!
The Scammers Paul Godson, "solicitor at law and a Partner in Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP...personal attorney to Mr. Douglas,an American who used to work with SHELL" Joyce Dike, of Natwest Bank - her name prompted some wise-ass asides David Mark, WU persona Milo Minderbinder, WU persona, named after a character in Catch-22; bearer of the appalling ID.
The Baiter Eliza Dane, short-tempered Odin-worshipping photomodel from Sydney Ross Dane, her protective older brother, and a Captain in the Special Air Services Regiment Freyja, Odin, Skadhi and Tyr - deities of the Norse pantheon, invoked by Eliza AJ, Eliza's boyfriend ...........

Janey,
I read one that went on for months and months - it was hilarious. I wish I could find it!

Did this email come to you at your normal email address or was it a PM on Genes? If a PM, you should advise GR immediately.
One of those Nigerian scammers wrote PM's to a number of us about a year ago on this Chat board. Fortunately, it was 'overnight' (UK time) and it was reported immediately. Top marks to GR for nipping it in the bud by removing the sender's membership. It's amazing what tricks these people get up to!

Berona,
Sent to my email. They usually get dumped before I see them but I was filling my time so answered...lol

Sue, you should know better LOL.
People should never ever reply to those kind of emails. OK, even if you haven't handed the bank details over that they are really after, replying lets them know that this is an active email address, so you'll be plagued by a million more like it now, as if we don't get enough of them already.
If I took notice of all those kind of emails, in my bank account this week alone I would have about thirty million pound inherited from an unknown rich relative, about forty million pounds won on various lottories, and probably in excess of fifty million pounds that needs shifting out of countries with oppressive governments.
Yeah right.
Elizabeth, while your warning is with good intentions, you can't get a virus from opening an email. You CAN get a virus from opening an ATTACHMENT connected to that email, which is a separate action.
