Kay???? Report 9 Mar 2010 21:47

you have to really pour it thin Puss,,,really really thin,let it set rock hard then hit it till it breaks up in small peices,,watch it dont turn sugary when it boils or it will be will like rock salt.:}}}}

melted sugar is best but need quite a bit to make a good batch,,

mum used to make it and we would put apples on sticks and dip it in to make toffee apples and put them stick up wards to cool, used to love the big skirt it had where the toffee ran down the apple and the set.
I seem to remember mum always put vinegar in the toffee mix which she made with Tate & Lyles Golden Syrup and sugar and some marg. (we didnt have butter!!)

You have all missed the most important hint.

Do not ever, ever leave it cooking on the stove, and forget about it.

You will (1) ruin the toffee (2) ruin the saucepan (3) stink the kitchen out.

I threw the saucepan in the bin!!!

You could just buy toffee!

My Dad used to make Toffee Apples every autumn when the fair came round. He did it so he didn't have to buy them as he said those ****** use bruised apples!

I can see those lovely toffee apples sitting, upside down, on baking paper even now.

My Mum used to make toffee using vinegar I seem to recall, and would break it up and give to all the kids in the neighbourhood, she would also make coconut ice and toffee apples as we had apple trees in the garden, and sometimes she would hand out twists of paper with freshly fried chips in to us kids playing out in the street.

Lorraine, hope the toffee got made and turned out well.

Mum was generous, she hated rationing so went mad when sugar was easier to get lol hence my sweet tooth and weight problem lol

You never escaped from her house without having some homemade cake or a piece to take home, even the local workmen when I made them a cuppa once as they worked on the park across from my street said Oh I know who your Mum is, thought you looked familiar, can you make cakes like her? She would feed everyone lol
