Surgeon Machinist - what is this?

The occupation of a Surgeon Machinist features several times in my Gayner family tree. Can anyone tell me what the job entailed and whether it was a military occupation?

Thanks Joan - you are probably correct as one of the said Surgeon Machinist had a son who is described as a Tool Maker. Nigel

Maybe not connected but I once worked with a guy that used to be an instrument maker for the great Archie Macindoe....

and Boy! did some of the "Tools "look crude, but effective!!
his trade was based as Tool maker, but a real tool maker will select the alloys best suitable for the job, and machine them right from a blank to the finished article, sharpening, welding,and heat treatment, and finishing! usually all done by hand!
