Thanks, Liz

I just knew there was a brazil nut in there once!

I hate orange sweets, toffees, coffee flavoured, strawberry flavoured, coconut....I don't think I'll buy them now!

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 11 Mar 2010 01:27

Quality Street was launched in 1936 by Halifax confectioner Mackintosh's, the name being inspired by a play of the same name by J. M. Barrie. 'The Major' and 'Miss', two figures inspired by the play's principal characters, appeared on all Quality Street boxes and tins until 2000. 'Major' and 'Miss' were originally modelled by Iris and Tony Coles, from Chingford, Essex, children of commercial artist Sydney Coles who created the brand's image.

The brand was acquired by Nestlé when they bought Rowntree's in 1988; indeed, the brand was one of the reasons for this takeover[citation needed].

In recent years, individual larger versions of the more popular chocolates have been manufactured and sold separately, as an extension to the brand. In particular the Milk Chocolate Hazelnut has been marketed individually as The Big Purple One, due to its traditional purple wrapper, there was also The Big Green Triangle and The Big Orange Crunch released quite recently.

Quality Street are often associated with the Christmas period in Britain, Ireland, and Canada and are bought as gifts throughout the season; in the latter country it is an important part of the ethnic identity of British heritage. In Western Norway, it is called "Shetlandsgodt" (Shetland Sweets), because it often was brought home by fishermen visiting Shetland. In Iceland it is traditionally known as "Mackintosh."

Quality Street in popular culture
In the "Training" episode of The Office, the David Brent character states that his band used to perform a political reggae number titled "Equality Street".

The British Folk Metal band Skyclad's 6th album Irrational Anthems features a song titled "Inequality Street".

On the "Odd One Out Round" of the last episode of HIGNFY hosted by Angus Deayton in October, 2002 reference was made to the revelation in the news that Saddam Hussein was a fan of the chocolates. Paul Merton quipped that "I suppose he just likes dressing up as the bloke on the tin".

Don't do much choccy eating these days Daff......but in my heyday I could get through quite a few of those purple ones, but they always had a hazlenut in, never known them to be any different......

.....trouble was my Daughter liked them too, then my DiL's.......and then I noticed that there were fewer of the purply ones in there.....and started on my second favourite which was the gold foiled squishy caramel one......then the lilac diamond fudgy one......and so on......

but.......big sigh......those days have gone.......but have you seen those really big ones.......we buy one each for fun for our DiL's at Christmas.....

...I wondered why, when dredging the last, least liked chocs in a tin, I suddenly apparently liked nuts in chocolate - it's because there aren't any!!!! LOL

MarionfromScotland Report 10 Mar 2010 22:08

Tell him to take you out then....and buy you some big 'purple sweets' lol

Wildgoose

Wildgoose Report 10 Mar 2010 21:44

The Purple One definitely had a brazil in it - I think they should be taken to court over it!

Talking of showing age; I used to love the makeweights you found in boxes of chocolates. I also loved lime barrels (Milk Tray) and the cherry ones in Black Magic both seem to have disappeared.

The bar of chocolate that was like a lot of different chocolates stuck together.

The different flavours in the Fry's bar.

How I miss them!

EDIT: Husband says it was never a Brazil; always a Hazelnut. He should know, he always pinches them first. AND the CHEEK of it; He says we should all get out more LOL

Kay????

Kay???? Report 10 Mar 2010 17:45

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 10 Mar 2010 17:01

I love them too :))
A bit like Walnut whips, you used to get a nut inside and on top.
I cant remeber which kind it is.ie celabrations/heroes but they cut out on the more expensive ones.

Daff - I do not eat them often enough to notice a change. But now you come to mention it, the one that I had at Christmas only had a small hazelnut in it. But, this is wrong surely. The Purple One is shaped like a Brazil, not a Hazelnut. Surely this comes under the Trades Description Act LOLOL

Wildgoose Report 10 Mar 2010 16:08

That's disgraceful.

I haven't had a 'purple one' in years. Must do some research this Easter.

We've said for a long time that chocolate is not what it used to be. AND it's very expensive now.

Lol McAnne, I like the toffees best.... but have a dodgy tooth, so don't want to risk it....

I don't *know* any others, lol... looks like I shall have to pig out and find another to love........ *sobs forlornly*

Or maybe I shall just have crumpets with jam..... that should satisfy the sweet craving... I rarely get one, but I am going to blame the steroids, cos I can ;¬))

Wasn't it always a hazelnut?

I love them but never liked nuts much so always sucked the caramel off the nut and spat it out.

(well, not spat exactly, gently removed it from my mouth and wrapped it in the paper)

I luuuuuurve the green triangles, especially the big ones you can get now lol

MrDaff Report 10 Mar 2010 15:59

In the tin of toffees... you know the one... well, my friends will know that I don't have a very sweet tooth.... and I just fancied a choccy... so nipped upstairs and opend a tin of chocs left over from Christmas.... and as I am partial to the Purple one when the mood takes me, I had one... couldn't believe it... so have now eaten 4, just for research, you understand.

There is NO WAY there is a brazil nut in there any more... it is a measly little half sized hazelnut..... and I love hazelnuts normally... but this.. well. Defies description.

So, my question is.... how long ago did the nuts get changed and downsized??? lol
