If he was entitled to any medals you can get the details on this site - it costs £3-50 to download . If you know the ships he served on you can also get details of the movements of merchant shipping from the same site, again £3-50 to download

My copies cost a couple of pounds for the photocopy - I went there and searched myself.

Hi Michael,
I also got my grandad's record cards with photo.
Here's the contact details:
A search of our cards costs £10. This would include sending copies of any cards found. The search fee is however payable whether successful or not. The collection covers the period 1918-41 and is in four series of cards, only one of which, the CR10s, contains a photograph. These were only issued 1918-21, but from the details in your email, your grandfather was maybe in the merchant navy at this time. This, of course, does not guarantee us finding a card for him.

If you wish to go ahead send a cheque, in sterling, payable to Southampton City Council to:

Archive Services

Southampton City Council

Civic Centre

Southampton

SO14 7LY

Please include a covering letter with name of seaman and date/place of birth (or approximation).

For those overseas who have problems sending a cheque in sterling, there is a facility to pay by credit card. In this case send your card number, expiry date, 3 digit security code, and name and full postal address of the cardholder by email.
