Beverley

I honestly don't think he was trying to damage me maliciously

What I think it was was someone (X) listening to "dad's" stories of family relationships .... and we all know what we suggest on GR about family stories!!

His father was the son of my dad's eldest brother ................ so his father and my brother and I were first cousins.

The families all used to get together at hatchings, matchings and dispatchings. Then X's mother and father moved themselves and 6 children into the wilds of Lincolnshire (literally! ... at least 3 miles from the nearest bus, and no car), and no more contact.

X's father must have been about 60 or so before X asked questions

What it does show is that X did NOT check details .............................. and yet he was claiming to be an expert on the family by setting up the ONS group.

.................... and that worries me a little because if he wasn't checking modern day stuff, how much checking was he himself doing on our ancestors?

EXCEPT for the following facts re the ancestral work:-

I do know that several people from around the world have traced the family back, and the information for many lines (this family was very prolific, 8 children was nothing!) checks out. That includes my line. Certificates, parish records, etc. I myself have lots of certificates.

But I do also know that most of the ancestral work posted by X was actually stolen from his brother who had done all that work very very carefully ....... and I have the proof!

And that was the real reason why he would not reply to me, because I inadvertently made it clear in letters and emails that I knew his brother had worked on the family back in the 1980s! Purely and simply because I got at cross purposes with which brother was which (both names begin with the same letter).

Then a younger brother of X's confirmed it all about 2 years ago when he made contact with me through GR.

Just wanted to add, all of my research is also done via the net. It is amazing the records that you can trawl through in the comfort of your own home. It is also easy to order certificates, download information from Scottish sites, criminal records and the list is virtually endless.

I cannot get to England or Scotland or Ireland or Germany. I do travel all over the world, and never leave my chair.

Very few of Antipodeans are able to go to the source of the information, the source can now come to us. I live in the middle of nowhere.

When I first started tracing the English and Scottish sides, I did not know where to turn, thanks mainly to GR members advice and lists of many sites I have been able glean so much information. Have had so much from dedicated GR members I have been able to trace those illusive ancestors.

My Irish side I have given up on for the time being.
