John King b. 19 Jan 1868 in Little Totham, Essex was said by the family to have left home and enlisted in the Army.

Could some kind person please suggest where I start to look for any record of this. He was said to have been in India and with Kitchener.

He married in 1899 and was settled back in West Ham, Essex.

Any suggestions as to where I should start to look for him in the Army would be much appreciated.

Dawnie, Many thanks - I thought I would need more information before trying the National archives. Will look in the morning - pages are very slow to load on GR tonight - don't know if it is just GR or my Mac.

TeresaW - John King married Henrietta Susannah Gaymer in West Ham, Essex 1899.

PM me if you would like more information - they are not in my tree on here but I have lots more if you would like to see it.

You won't find anything on him on the National Archives site. You need an idea of when he might have left the Army to be able to look for his records as they are filed by date band of date of discharge. It sounds from the information you've given that he probably left between 1883 and 1900. You would need to go to the National Archives or get someone to go for you - the records aren't online.

Reece, if you're interested and can't do the Archives searching yourself, I can recommend a professional who did a bang-up job for me, finding an Anglo-Boer War / Imperial Yeomanry enrolment record that was a huge help to me. If you are, just PM me and I'll send you their email address.
