Well i am glad i ask the question as it has certainly produced a variety of replies. The tree that aggrevated me in the first place had over 8000 entries of which 80% were Hidden. Allowing for rules, over the top views on identity theft etc my own view is that type of action is plan silly .I have removed the contact and info as being a waste of time. The challenge of the search, the find, and the correctness of that find, is what personally gives me pleasure and others will be welcome to that info whenever. Thanks to all who responded.

I've known a few who only have their tree on GR so of course they want to add all their family onto it and then feel reluctant to let just anyone see it.
I had an unpleasant (for me) experience a few months ago - I shared my tree with someone who had common ancestors from the 1790s back. As I had living people hidden I didn't have any concerns but the person actually used the BMDs to work out details and then put them all on a tree on another website - not only annoying and intrusive but horrifying for me because one particular section of the information related to info which couldn't be found in the public domain. Luckily the member was very quick to remove the info when I asked but it's obviously made me very uncomfortable about sharing my tree now.

It is against the rules to include the name of any living relative without their permission and some people can be very upset at the idea of their details being published on the internet. There is also the matter of fraud/identity theft, etc. to be considered.
However, my own experience after allowing access to my tree, was that I found my details on another site, and they were not only incorrect, but showed me as a bigamist with two children more than I knew about! This person copied whole blocks of my tree incorrectly, then gave access to others, who also copied incorrectly, and so on...... I have just over 400 names in my tree - the other person had thousands of names in their tree and would not give me access. I have yet to learn how they could be related to me. I believe that they are not related, but just added blocks of names to feel important because of the size of their tree.
I am happy to answer questions about a certain relative and give what information I can pertaining to that person and/or their immediate family - but I will no longer give anyone access to the whole tree.
"Living Persons" are those born within the last one hundred years and for whom there is no date of death recorded. If a date of death is entered into the tree, is remains open.

We don't OWN our ancestors....we dont' have exclusive rights.
OK some might kick up that they have paid for all their research and dont' want relations 'stealing' that off them, but why put them on the tree in the first place?
I still like to verify my findings on other trees myself, and if I have to pay for that, so bit it....but it doesn't worry me one bit if people used information from my tree to add to theirs....will it kill me? No it won't...so welcome to it.

A very very old fashioned reply and i guess a naieve one, "GENES REUNITED" a place to share information i understand hiding living relatives bit but the other to me on my humble opinion is like having sweets and not sharing them, i enjoy giving a helping hand and recieveing it too especially if you are on a tight budget.

I CANT UNDERSTAND SOME WITH ONE NAME IN THEIR TREE EITHER THEY WANT TO FIND MORE THEN WHY NO NAMES OR ARE THEY TOTALY FOR THEIR RESEARCH AND NOT WILLING TO SHARE
IF I FIND SOMEONE IN ANOTHER TREE I ALWAYS ASK CAN I HAVE SUCH NAMES AND DATES

i think there are three levels of research here, which may be reflected in the number of people in a given tree.
First, and I think this is the majority, there are those thoroughly research individuals, mainly in thier direct lines of ancestry, and probably prefer to find out more about those individuals than just names and dates. This makes each of those individuals more real, fleshing out the bones so to speak, and makes for some very interesting historical and social research to get a 'feel' for them
Secondly, there are those who add to a tree once a connection, however tenuous, has been made, therefore gathering names without always verifying their relationship....and there are some.
Third, there are the name collectors. they will find everyone with the same surname, and connect them in their tree. This isn't always accurate, nor reliable. I had a name collector contact me regarding one particular name in my tree, he had thousands of them and sent me an email with them all on. FORTY FIVE PAGES! However, I never heard from him again when I questions the first few, and none of mine were on there. That's not to say all name collectors are innacurate, another one has been an enormous help to another branch of my tree, but then again, he's put it on an entire website, with wills, census, parish records et al. This one really did his research.
But, finding something good in someone elses tree doesn't mean you don't have to do the research yourself to verify it to your own satisfaction....and I still do, sometimes finding more information than is presented in that persons tree.

Thanks for your viewpoint LollyWithSprinklez As the experience of my viewing a tree that i would say was 80% hidden and to which i was directed by Hot Matches which only brings about further ??s. I think hopefully after viewing other replies i will have to descide whether i open my tree to others or keep it completely closed. What a shame if we all had to take that action. Thanks Again

Shaba unlike yourself I am constantly amazed by the people who open up their trees without any attempt to hide living relations,
In this day and age it is very risky to be giving out individuals personal data which can be used in all manner of ways without them ever being aware of the source [It is also against the rules to include living relatives without their permission]
If a member wishes to know more and has a definate link to my tree I would under certain circumstances give details to that part of the tree that we share, but I can see no benefit in allowing access to all of the tree.
I think mostly people with trees on here are more than happy to share and help, It does very much depend on how they are approached and if you can show you have a link.

I must admit to being on the new side to Genes Reunited. However i have a question that i would welcome answers too. In the event of requesting to view a fellow members tree which is resultantly granted ,i have found in rare cases that it has so many tree persons hidden it makes the whole thing unreadable. ?Why. I have never had a reason to do this. To protect living relatives, ans :-possible but what harm would it do. ? To protect your own hard work. Ans :- Well yes!! but if others use my tree for that reason, then they have lost all the pleasure of doing the research. No i cannot think of a good reason but would welcome comment.
