Alright Guys

Do any of you know any websites that lists Traviling familes? My Family "McCallum" were from a Traveling background I say traveling, but they were classed as Tinkers as they did not live in an actual house. They lived on farm land and in woods. I'm finding it hard to trace them on certan Censuses. I'm also having a lot of confusion because i have Three Marriges from Two Familys, McCallum and Stewart. They married into each other. Ie Cousins marrying each other.

They were living around the Kilmaronock,Balfron,Drymen,Fintry and St.Ninians area.

Any help would be greatfully accepted.

Garry

I googled and found several sites, try putting travellers + genealogy in the search box and see if any are helpful to you.

This is one I found http://www.rtfhs.org.uk/

Good luck with your research Garry

When you have these people on the census they are usually on the end and down as Caravan, Tent etc.

I have found OH's lot on census records as 'living in caravans/vans' the names can be mistranscribed or simply given wrongly..lol

Good luck

There are a few members on here who are researching travellers who may be be able to give you more tips. However, (excuse my ignorance) I'm not sure whether there may be a difference between tinkers and those with a Romany background so I'm not sure whether the research would be exactly the same.

Good luck Garry with your tree :)

http://www.gypsytravellerhelp.org/information.html

This site has lots of historical information and stories about itinerant people.

I had a site which featured circus/gypsy travellers but it looks like I have deleted it. Ooh just remembered I might have it in my saved thread notes. Will look.

Would you believe I've found it. However it is more to do with circus and travelling theatre people. Amazing what info I've stored since I started this searching business.
For info therefore:

Cheers Guys

My McCallum Family were Classed as Tinkers on One Census & Travelling Gypsies on another. and on them all they are ether living in tents in woods or living on a place called Robertsons Land in Drymen or Balfron Stirlingshire.

Thanks for the websites!!

After a quick scan through I can see that they were not an actual Gypsie Family. So i now belive that they were Just Ordanary Tinkers.
