GRO :) If my marriages are at my nearest RO, I go along and search til I find them cos I am getting tight but otherwise the GRO - a lot of my ancestors are from Islington and they didn't used to do them, don't know if they do now.

Thanks Uggers. I used to get them from the Registrars and then realised the GRO was quicker. If I can get them from the record office, I will as it's much cheaper.

I didn't realise to relatively recently that the local office has the original handwriting and I could kick myself (although I know the local registrar sometimes transcribes it)

with Scottish certs I now use Scotlandspeople.

They're usually only transcribed if the handwriting is illegible from the GRO - otherwise they're just copied from there too. SP is wonderful isn't it - except you can spend a fortune in a flash ;)

I know, however it's cheaper than certs. I spent a fortune on it's predecesor Scottish Origins where you could order the certs online like the GRO now offers.

Far prefer SP. Even found my missing catholic baptisms on there recently. Waiting for them to release the catholic parish marriages, hoping for some clues.

That reminds me, I should order the English marriage cert for the same family. I've already ordered it once years and years ago (the Gro even checked it for me and said it wasn't them) I've now got the parish records and I think it is them but don't have the father's occupation so feel that I need to find out. They didn't charge me the full price but I felt cheated as I wanted the cert, I must have known it was them. My own fault I shouldn't have added the extra detail.

I may just order it from the local registar this time.

Budgie, they're written by the same person - the marriage cert was replicated afterwards and sent off to the registrar so it's all exactly the same except - as you say - for the original signatures when they were there:)
