No Daff, I have an apple, don't have a pc. Don't normally have any problems with my computer. I see people having problems all the time with their pcs and I usually sigh with relief because my life is far less complicated having a Mac. I've had my computer for years, about 6 years or over(6 years of very hard labour lol). I think one of the memory boards have a fault (not bad after all this time) so I have to keep reinserting them. I've got half of them in at the moment and I think I'm going to swap them over to the other half tonight to see if that stops the problem. Then I will introduce the rest of the memory until I identify which one is causing the problem.

There appears to be no other problems apart from that so I have managed to back up my latest data in between the computer freezing every now and again.

I'm trying to avoid a new computer at the moment even though the new Imacs look wonderful. (I wish they were a bit cheaper) My computer has always exceeded my expectations and I think the pcs have only just caught up with my old system. However, I broke my Internet wotsit when trying to sort out my computer so if I get the memory sorted (if it is that), I'll have to buy a new thingymyjig lol

Ann, I am a numpty as well.... and I am partly tongue in cheek when I said that about Vista.... my pc is less than 3 years old, and I am of a generation that expects 30 years hard labour from something that expensive, lol

I save my gedcoms to either a cd or an external drive.... and yes, you can save it from your GR tree... you might lose stuff like photos, but the main bulk of your tree will be fine. Oh, and it copies, it doesn't delete your tree from GR.

I am not sure where it is now, but there used to be a step by step guide to exporting your tree.... try looking around on the homepage.......

Good luck

Love

Daff xxx

ps.... it doesn't lose the photos on your GR tree... just might not transfer to another tree elsewhere, such as Ancestry or Tribal Pages or wherever you have another tree stored xxx

Sorry to be a numty be how do you do it? I have seen the gedcom bit when you click on Family Tree, but if you click on export, does it copy your tree to e-mail or does it remove it off GR altogether???

Any help appreciated.

I have Vista too, but it hasn't been giving any probs.

I thought I had them backed up on my external wotsit... but they weren't.... mostly empty folders... just the odd photo made it through, so haven't a clue what happened... then son re-formatted my pc... so all gone... never mind, I still have the memories, no-one can take those away... and I had printed out a couple of my favourite ones, so I have those, too.

You haven't by any chance, got a Vista as well? I have a conspiracy theory going on at the moment, as my pc (an early Vista) plays up every time there is a massive Windows update....... this morning it threw a real wobbly because I had the audacity to give permission for Vista 2 Service pack to be up(or down... get them muddled, lolol) loaded.... ok now, but it took a couple of hours of valuable time... time that I was supposed to spend in the garden centre on un-necessary fripperies like fleecy tunnels, and strawberry seeds and stuff.........

Sorry to hear that Daff, I am having problems with my computer at the moment. My tree is backed up hopefully and my photos are sort of backed up on my iPod. (full resolution) I am thinking about getting an external hard drive as a backup.
