Hi help please anyone I m new to this and confused by the marriage registers which only say one persons name and nothing else . how can I find out who they were marrying ? For example I know for sure that a sarah cumberland married thomas hanson in in nottingham in about the 1850s and stilll cant find it So how would i do it if i didnt have a womans maiden name ?

you could try a search on ancestry putting in all the mans details date ,place full name etc and sometimes you get the spouses details. if you have found an entry you can order a marriage cert and that would give you the womans details etc. how much info do you have and what is it?

I found this entry.

HAZARD Sarah Nottingham 15 936

Is it possible you have the maiden name wrong?

None found for a Sarah Cumberland between 1840 and 1860 in Nottingham. So it looks like the maiden name is incorrect.

perhaps Sarah was married before ?

Whether you use Ancestry or freebmd, the search system is basically the same.

Using freebmd (as everyone can access that) fill up the search form. In this instance, use Thomas Hanson and selecting marriages and date range Mar 1850 - Dec 1855. In the Counties box, select Nottingham

Results are

Susannah, in this instance, is transcribed twice as the volunteer transcriber wasn't sure of the correct spelling of her surname.

You would have to check the next availble census using the man's name to see the first name of his wife.

Of course the only sure way would be to order the certificate, unless you already have the wife's name from the BC of one of their children.

I also have had a look 1849-1860 for your Hanson/Cumberland and unfortunately can't find it. It could be that she was married before so not married under a maiden name of Cumberland
