I have just logged on and instead of being greeted with the usual Hello Margaret - I am greeted with Hello Forename. I have checked my personal details and all is correct and re-inputted my Board Name Midlands Margaret. This for some reason wasn't allowed so if I put a thread up now it is just Margaret. Also, it is taking an absolute age to respond when I try to go onto a General/Records or Trying to Find Board. Are Genes doing something in the way of maintenance or has something gone wrong on my account. How can I get the normal Midlands Margaret board name to be accepted as it was previously. Thanks.

Margaret, they were doing some maintenance this morning as i kept getting 'locked out'. Also if you look at PM's, you can now save a draft of your PM. I hadn't noticed that before.

For quite some time the site has not accept board names with a space in. I changed my email address and had to take the spaces out of my board name to get it to save the changes

I couldn't put a space in my name either.

What I can't understand is that my opening page said Hello Margaret yesterday and my board name Midlands Margaret has been used for years. At no point had I personally altered it, so something has gone awry. In fact I have just looked back on 'My Threads' and all my contributions have the name Midlands Margaret - with the space between the two. I have emailed Genes to see what the problem but will probably have to wait days for an answer. Most frustrating.

I'm getting "Hello Forename" as well.

Everything else seems unaffected.

Interesting Brian to see that your board name still has the space between ! I wonder why they have messed mine up ?

Not sure what is happening but I do not even have a greeting when I login to this site. Just says standard member and no mention of any name.

Well I got a reply from Genes saying that I wasn't allowed to have a space in my board name and I was so indignant because it had always had a space previously and there were tons on the boards with spaces I emailed again and pointed this out. Anyway they replied again and I must be 100% thick because I am not grasping exactly what they mean. Reply as follows:

The format has been amended and spaces are no longer allowed in community names. Those with spaces all have their names as their registered names on site, rather than using their community name. For example , instead of using Bob Smith as their 'real' registered name, they have registered as 'Bob from Kent'. If you wish, you may change your name on site to 'Midlands Margaret' however this will mean that all your contacts will use that name. We will not be amending the format of our community names.

Well, as I said I must be thick because I don't know what they are on about. I registered years ago and always used Midlands Margaret and all contacts refer to me as that, but from the above I cannot work out exactly how I can do what they are suggesting pr where to look on the site to do it !!

Anyone any wiser than me ? Thanks.

PS I have just noticed I am back to being greeted with Hello Forename on the opening page. They did put this right yesterday but I am back again to being anonymous !! I give up.

There's still something wrong with their links.

I think I changed my 'Surname' to ...in Kent. some time ago.

Is that what they mean?

What they are saying is that you can't use "Bob from Kent" in your Board Name, because it has spaces. However, if you delete your Board Name you can change your real name to be "Bob From Kent" and this is what will display when you post a thread.

However, the downside is that when you contact a member re your tree, the name "Bob From Kent" will also appear as your name.

I would also say that if your old board name no longer complies, then you can continue to use it, until such time as you try and change any of your personal account details.

dunno if this'll work for you but try entering ALL your boardname in your first name field...

So testing to see if I have got it back by changing my christian name to board name

The Hello Forename is a bug in the program code, so no point in trying to suss out why till GR fix it.

I am AuntySherlock and that is all the information I have in my account on the first line. All other lines where names or parts of names go, just have dots on them.

Why would you wish someone to see your real name when answering a PM or sending a message.

Everyone on here knows me as DEREK......and I think i have a lot of good mates......suddenly I'm FORENAME..........don't like it...........

I've had no problems since I switched on here about 7 pm UK time .................. not sure what time it was because our clocks went forward on Sunday for DST, so I'm still a bit confused at what the time difference really is!


Any way, everyone has shown a name in the headers since I came into GR.



I lost Sylvia (in Canada) some weeks ago when I went into My Account to make sure that they had not put me on to Continuous Subscription, as they have a tendency to do.

Having changed that status, I lost my board name because of the spaces. Neither spaces nor any other symbols are allowed except for letters and numbers

The only way I could do it was with no spaces, but may try putting it as my first name


I do use my maiden name as my name on here .............. my married name does not appear anywhere
