Have you lot noticed the new string of words at the bottom of the page. Ancestry, BMD, Family Search, etc etc.

I wondered if they are setting up links to connect to those sites. Right now if you click on the words you are sent to the GR Home Page.

Might be handy too, however I find opening all the sites on the tabs across the top of the screen works for me.

I never log out of GR ... sometimes they log me out ............... but I never do it.

Have now discovered that if I log out from GR, then next time I have no choice but to log in again. When I do, I get my name back.

Out of laziness, I frequently close GR without logging out, and it is when I return (without having to log in again) that I become 'Forename'.

This is a bit of a nuisance, especially if you are switching between websites a lot, as it is so easy to close a site accidently without logging out.

Anyone else found the same?

Is anyone getting 'Site Error' when they try o do searches at all??

I have had this now for the last 3 hours???

I know they were updating the other day but what is going on now??

I thought it was only me with problems and have been searching all programmes on my computer to try and find out what it was. Now I see that the only website giving me problems is Genes. Why don't they post a message on the site to say what they are doing. Everytime I switch from the main page to my tree it tells me I have an error on page. It really is very frustrating when you want to update your tree. I do not have a problem over my name though. It appears on the page. I just hope they sort it out soon!

The Hello Forename bug seems to have been fixed. It now shows the first line of your real name.

I am %2A%7E%7E%2APosh%2A%7E%7E%2A According to the top of the page!! Lol But on the home page I am *~~*Posh*~~*

I can't get into my tree and haven't been able to for 2 days now! xxx

you know, until you mentioned this phenomenon, I was none the wiser, as my shortcut always brings me into genes on the Gen board, just had a look at the home page, and yep .........i'm a forename too.

but unless they mess around with my board name, I'm not particularly bothered!!

Thank goodness it is not just me! I thought that perhaps it was something to do with having just had my membership automatically renewed. So now I know it isn't!
I keep getting locked out of here. I have to go through the whole rigmarole of typing my email address and password - no big deal, but a nuisance after all these years. Very irritating.
I am finding Genes more and more 'sticky' and unpredictable when trying to research or check facts. No improvements yet since Genes were bought out. Will there ever be?

Thank you everyone. I am sorry you too are experiencing problems but selfishly I am pleased as well because it does confirm that I am not the idiot I thought I was. I think I will put my christian name in as Midlands Margaret as for some silly reason this alteration is irritating me to death. Thanks again.

I am also now "hello forename", and I never had any spaces in my name, so that's no excuse.

It seems to me that GR view all their customers as a bit of a nuisance really. They wish we would all go away and stop making such a mess of their beautiful systems. Stop asking silly questions.

It is very like the attitude of so many bits of our so called Public Services. The majority of the people who work there have never worked anywhere that customers could choose an alternative, so they don't have a clue about customer service.

Another clue by the way, is that when you do get an answer you can't understand it. This is because they have a vocabulary of their own, which is designed to keep outsiders out. If you don't believe me, try understanding job adverts for Local or National Government , or for any other organisation that you find frustrating.

I've had no problems since I switched on here about 7 pm UK time .................. not sure what time it was because our clocks went forward on Sunday for DST, so I'm still a bit confused at what the time difference really is!


Any way, everyone has shown a name in the headers since I came into GR.



I lost Sylvia (in Canada) some weeks ago when I went into My Account to make sure that they had not put me on to Continuous Subscription, as they have a tendency to do.

Having changed that status, I lost my board name because of the spaces. Neither spaces nor any other symbols are allowed except for letters and numbers

The only way I could do it was with no spaces, but may try putting it as my first name


I do use my maiden name as my name on here .............. my married name does not appear anywhere

I am AuntySherlock and that is all the information I have in my account on the first line. All other lines where names or parts of names go, just have dots on them.

Why would you wish someone to see your real name when answering a PM or sending a message.

As IGP said in his interpretation of the GR message, "However, the downside is that when you contact a member re your tree, the name "Bob From Kent" will also appear as your name."

Is not that what we want to happen.

The Hello Forename is a bug in the program code, so no point in trying to suss out why till GR fix it.

I probably lost my board name because I had wanted to check something in My Account

So testing to see if I have got it back by changing my christian name to board name
