Has anyone been on omeprazole for a long time??

Or should it only be taken for a short time.??

I have only seen it used for a short period .... I think there might be problems if used over an extended time.... but that would be with people who had other things going on, healthwise, at the same time, as was the case with the client group I worked with.

I would suggest having a word with the pharmacist if you are concerned..... they are brilliant if you need info like that, better than a doctor!

Hi Helen,

My partner is on this drug. He has a problem with the valve above his stomach that basically doesn't work and he has bad problems with reflux. Well since he has been on this drug he doesn't have any issues.

He used to take it in the mornings and found that he used to have some slight dizziness or light headedness during the day. Now he takes it at night time and doesn't have any problems.

He has to take this permanently or he will suffer. If he misses taking it, he can last about 3 days before he starts suffering. Other than that when he takes it he's fine.

Julia, it is for *tummy* and digestive tract problems, such as reflux etc... I worked with a young woman who used to get Helicobacter Pylorii whenever she got very stressed out, and she had it with antibiotics to clear up and soothe the HP.

I had it for a short time last year (about 2 days), but got C Diff (not because of it, lol, because of the antibiotics for the septicaemia) so they took me off it.. there is some reaction between C Diff and it, not sure what...

Fortunately, I haven't had many problems since recovering, and Gaviscon sorts that out, lol

Daff thanks, thought it might help my problem, but I do not think so now you have explained it. Seeing the Pancreas man next week. Wish they would make their minds up though, the emergency staff at the hospital are getting very fed up with me keep making reappearaces.

It can be taken long term in some cases but it should be only under a doctor .........

have a relation in it and he asked how long and he was told it causes less problems than some others

Been taking it for years. Somewhere it says you shouldn,t be on it for a long time but for me it is a magic pill.

Yes I have been on it for about 10 years as I have a LARGE Hiatus Hernia and this is to reduce the stomach acid build up that used to give me bad acid reflux and regurgitaion of food. I take one 20 mg capsule every morning but still have to be careful what i eat as some foods can still give me problems. If we go out to Dinner in the evening I only eat a small salad at lunchtime and limit the courses, sometimes I can only manage a main course and coffee.and still have to take Gaviscon when I get home. I have been to the hospital and had the camera down etc and both the Hospital & my GP agree on long term use of it.

Me to, been on it for a couple of years or so.

Both OH and myself have been on it for years and no problems. But those who get lightheadedness have given me a pointer to why OH gets that so often.

My dad has been on it since his stroke,three and a half years ago.He was addicted to Rennies before that,seriously,several packets a week.

It was very difficult trying to make the hospital aware of this too and he was asking me to bring him some from home all the time.

He does not seem to have any problems with it.

i have been taking it for several years because i have a hiatus hernia, i have never had a problem with it..

Hi Helen, I have been taking Omeprazole for over ten years, 10mg. a day
and have had no adverse affects. HAve to take it to eliminate side effects from other medication.

i've been on it over 2 years without any problems, I have a hiatus hernia and gastric reflux, the acid is dreadful without the omprazole

We also use it as an IV drug on the ward I work on and it works marvelously

I have been taking it for a couple of years. Had the camera down my throat and I have a layer of skin missing from my osophagus. Can go a couple of days without it but I watch what I eat and don't overeat or else I get a feeling like a trapdoor has come down and I can't eat another mouthful. At its worst I get a terrible pain in my chest, thought I was having a heart attack. No one said to limit my intake of it at all.

I've been on it for about 5 years.

I have Barrett's Syndrome, which is a pre-pre-cancerous condition caused by acid reflux.

Some stomach cells migrated up into the oesphagus with the acid reflux I had for a couple of years, and they grew into the oesophageal wall. They can start to divide wildly, and that will lead to pre-cancer ....... so the acid reflux has to be controlled.


I take 40 mg of omeprazole every morning before breakfast, and 300 mg Zantac immediately after the evening meal.


The gastro specialist did say I was to take the omeprazole for only 3 months and then try going off it. The GP says I will be on it for the rest of my life.


I start feeling "off" if I miss one day, and get reflux within 3 days.


I've found that I have to have the brand name Losek or I have problems. I've tried a couple of others including a generic, and they just don't work.

After only one week Omeprazole has stop the coughing,which means i sleep at night,and i am not afraid to go out.

My husband is watching what i eat,so i am ok there.

What have i learnt?-----You have to have a sense of humour to get through it?

I've been on this for about 5yrs.
Used to take it morning and night, and the hospital told me tostop taking the one at night, as too much of this drug isn't good for you.

I now take 30mg in the morning, and without it, the acid reflux is horrid.
