from someone who knows their stuff! I need to lose 3 stone and cutting out carbs isnt working, I just think 'Foof, food' all the time. So have bought a good rowing machine and am doing 10 mins a day (200 rows), but how much should I be doing? And is it best to do batches of 200 rows, or one lot of say, 800 rows?? Its no good me having a long term goal as I give up easily, so Ive given myself a 'boot camp' of 12 weeks to get back into shape. Even if I dont lose the whole 3 stone I can still make a change.....I just dont know how!

I have been told that it is better to do spurts of exercise..... especially at first... alternate between gentle and then some fast hard rowing (I am exhausted just thinking about it!!) then a break, then start up again..... and always start and finish on the gentle bit..

Other than that... I am sure someone will be along who will have more expertise than I.... but that is what I was told as part of my fitness regime by the physio!

Three or four years ago my son and his wife started the Slimming World diet and decided to do some exercise at the same time. My daughter in law started swimming but my son doesn't like the water so he bought a really good rowing machine (the type they have in gyms) and he did half an hour each day after work. He feels that it was the exercise more than the diet that helped him lose weight. He lost 7 and a half stone and daughter-in-law lost 6 stone (in about 15 months).

He still uses the rowing machine now but not quite as often.

They both got to the last 6 places in the Slimming World Mr and Mrs. Slimmer of the Year Contest.

Always warm up first to avoid straining anything. Walking is grea,t try to push yourself to go bit faster or further than you normally would.
Start with10/15 minutes a day according to your present fitness levels and gradually increase this as it becomes easier.

Don't think ''3 stone'' just aim to lose half a stone and you will see a difference, when you get there aim for the next half stone etc

For one week minimum write down EVERY THING and I do mean EVERY THING you eat and drink and the time that you eat it - then briefly analize it all. For example how much fat did you eat, how much was rubbish and was it late at night. Did you really need X, were you hungry or just fancied it.

The second week aim to make improvements on the first week. It really does help to keep up the writing down bit.

Good luck

Kathleen, oh my Lord! What a huge amount of weight, they did amazingly well!! So half an hour a day sounds like it would definately work then. I looked into one slimming group, I think it might have been slimming world, but Im such a fussy eater I wouldnt have eaten the recipes they give you so I havent joined anywhere, also tied to nursery times for my youngest child at the minute. Thanks Wendy, I never thought of writing everything down, I feel guilty already with the amount of mini chocolate bars and crisps I put away!! But its amazing the food you eat and you think 'oh its little, it doesnt count' etc. I suppose one bonus of exercising is that while youre rowing, you dont have any spare hands to eat ;-)

Yes, they certainly did well and looked like completely different people afterwards. I wish I could do the same but I have no willpower and I also need to lose about 6 stone.

I must say that my son has put back some of his weight (although nowhere near what he lost) but daughter-in-law has kept hers off well.

I have also lost weight through Slimming World. I didn't fancy using Weight Watchers as I can't be doing with counting points or working oiut calories. Slimming World uses Red or Green days. I preferred the green days and there are lots of foods that you can eat as much as you want as long as you stick to the right group. You are also allowed so many sins a week, which means you don't have to give up chocolate or wine etc

Exercise I think is more beneficial if done in several bursts rather than one long session, and people are more likely to keep doing short seesions. A rowing machine is very good, you could also walk up/down the stairs several time in succession to get your heart rate up, twice a day can make a difference. Also just going for walks benefits you.

Well done you for wanting to lose the weight, hope you keep us updated.

I was reading today that fructose is very fattening, and it's in lots of foodstuffs as it's cheaper than sugar, it's made from cornsyrup. I have too much weight around my middle, I am apple shaped and get it from my mother who was the same and ended up with angina and diabetes and died from her third heart attack so I really must try not to eat so much of the wrong things, I eat plenty of good things like vegetables and fruit but it's the biscuits and other things that are the problem. Doesn't help that o.h., who has just been diagnosed as diabetic so supposed to be watching what he eats, came back from the shop with a banana and pineapple cake! It was a bit dry so cried out for some chocolate icecream on lol
I know I don't do enough exercise but with fm and cfs and oa in my knees it's very hard to find the energy.

Good luck with your efforts
