HELP!!! HOW DO I TRACE AN ADOPTION? IVE JUST DISCOVERED THAT A RELATIVE IN MY FAMILY TREE WAS ADOPTED ..IT WAS HIS REAL MUM BUT WHO WE HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT WAS HIS REAL DAD WAS HIS ADOPTED FATHER .. IS THERE ANYWHERE WHERE I CAN VIEW THESE ADOPTION PAPERS AS I NOW KNOW HE HAS A DIFFERENT NAME ON HIS BIRTH CERT BUT I DONT KNOW WAT IT IS ...NE HELP WOULD B WONDERFUL

YOU cant view his adoption papers .they are only available to him. If his mum was his natural mum then you should be able to find his birth under her maiden name

He could quite likely have been registered with his mother's maiden name as his surname.

thanx for ur help but i dont know her maiden name either ... and sadly he has now passed away and we didnt find out he was adopted until he passed..

hi gwen .. ty for your reply but i have found out from a relative that he took his adopted fathers name as he always beleived he was his real father.. we was only told of the adoption aftet his death and that he had another name at birth ... i do not know his mothers maiden name

Did the person marry?
His father would be named there, ...then you could look for a marriage record for that father....to the child's mother.

Presumably the adoptee's death is since 1969, so you should have a date and place of birth for guidance.

If the mother died after 1969, her maiden name should be shown on her death certificate.

his mother is still alive as far as i know but none of the family have contact with her...yes he did marry,and yes he did die after 1969 ..thank you for your help i will look into those options.. i usually use freebmd do you know of any other free websites where i may find this info ..thanx lorraine

Sometimes when an unmarried mother got married then the child would be adopted by those parents. The marriage cert of the mother to that father should give information. Have a go at looking for that mans marriage and use the mothers christian name might work.

An unmarried mother sometimes adopted her child (i know of few of these circa 1950's 60's.

The reason I am telling you on this thread is because I have noticed that new messages don't appear to show up these days on the little envelope - or is it just me?
