Much better, ta. Back to avoiding work by procrastinating rather than being in a codeine-induced coma. ;)

Rose - milk loaf? I can see myself getting all tied in knots over these transatlantic food weirdnesses again ...

... Yup.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2007/nov/24/foodanddrink.baking10

Self-raising flour, weighed instead of measured the normal way, isn't bad enough. Now we have "strong white bread flour" ...

I'm going to stick to my plastic-packaged 12-grain, I think, for regular grilled cheese or egg salad sandwiches, with the super-high-fibre-low-carb pita for my super jerk chicken caesar sandwiches.

Egg salad. You call that egg mayonnaise, I believe, where the yanks tend to call it chopped egg ...

Comedians have various little tales about the differences between Canucks and Yanks. One is: Yanks order a tuna fish sandwich; Canadians order a tuna sandwich and just assume it will be fish. ;)

Straying from bread, but I thought you might like this, Whirley:

http://www.samueljohnson.com/cucumber.html

351. Cucumbers; Eating
"It has been a common saying of physicians in England, that a cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out, as good for nothing."
Boswell: Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides

My mum, from whom I get my love of vinegar (but who is not a pepper freak like her mother and my other grandmother, and me) does just that: slices cucumber and puts vinegar and pepper on it and leaves it in a bowl in the kitchen to snack on.

I'm fond of cucumber myself, but it's one of the few foods I would never put pepper on ...

Of course, Johnson also said:

http://www.samueljohnson.com/dogwalk.html

53. Dog walking on his hind legs; Expectations; Pioneers; Women preaching
I told him I had been that morning at a meeting of the people called Quakers, where I had heard a woman preach.
Johnson: "Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."
Boswell: Life

Warburtons, to MY mind DO do a thinnish sliced loaf, but I prefer the thicker ones , specially for toasting,

I only buy sliced bread (and freeze it)these days as when I used to buy tesco's tin loaves they soon went off......

I don't think it's what it used to be :( not the sliced stuff anyway, you can't get a thin sliced loaf for love nor money , and I did used to like it especially for cucumber sandwiches so you tasted the filling as much as the bread.
