Thank you so much. I was so surprised to get answers so quickly, so please forgive my tardy gratitude.

I will certainly have a look at military.

Thanks again.

The 99th (Duke of Edinburgh) Regiment

James Holsgrove 1064 Sergt is listed on the Medal Roll for Zulu war in South Africa

PM me with an eamil address and I'll send you the image.
BTW
My gt gt grand father (Pte Alfred Dewberry) was also in the 99th and is also listed on the medal roll - I'm sure they would have known each other.

Does anyone know much about this regiment. I was looking into the Holsgrove family and James Holsgrove (c.1852) is stated as being a Lance Sergeant in the 99th Regiment of Foot on his marriage certificate. I tried Googling this and they seem to have fought in the first Boer War in the Anglo-Zulu battle. All I know for certain is that he married in Clonmel Barracks (Tipperary, Ireland), had one child there, and the following two children were born in Bermuda and subsequent children were all born in Glasgow. All this fits in with him fighting in 1878-1880.

It would be interesting to find out how they lived, etc.

I know all this about his life but cannot find where or when he was born. Some records state 1842 and others state 1852 (someone obviously got their sums wrong!). The story handed down in the family is that he was a Yorkshire man but cannot find him anywhere, despite knowing his parents names.

Thanks
