7m cigarettes in lorry freezerBorder officials have seized seven million illegally-imported cigarettes from inside a lorry after it arrived at a British port.



The cigarettes were recovered from a freezer unit on a 40ft lorry that had reached Newhaven ferry port in East Sussex from Dieppe.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) estimated that had the cigarettes reached the black market, it would have cost the Treasury £1.3 million in lost tax.
A 42-year-old unnamed lorry driver from Lanarkshire was arrested in connection with the seizure and freed on police bail until July 26.

The cigarettes would be burned at a power station to fuel the National Grid while inquiries continued, a HMRC spokesman said.

I wouldnt put it past em, but I would have thought they could re brand em and sell em legitimately?

Problem with this, and any other counterfeited goods, is a doubly whammy... the Treasury loses out, and these losses are passed on to the taxpayer.... and we all pay tax in one way or another, as VAT, for instance.

Also.... much of the proceeds are known to be used to support, finance and train terror organisations.... so the bombs going off in London might have been financed by profit from that pirate dvd you bought.

I would never knowingly purchase anything counterfeit.....

Was just thinking...Surely it would be worth their while to seize them. Repackage them and sell them at an economy price? That way they make something out of them rather than see them go up in smoke,...ok not that they wouldn't go up in smoke eventually of course lol...but you know what I mean (I think lol) xx

ciggies are not always counterfeit,,,,,they are exported from this country to spain and like for sale in their shops,,,,,why can these countires sell a pct of fags same as we buy here for abt £2-50 £3 pk when same here costs near £5....

200 ,in Spain costs £23/4 .here same fags bought ligit costs nr £40 or over ...,,,,,,if it wasnt for smokers Taxes would be a lot higher,,,if every smoker stopped,who would the much needed tax be passed on to,,,,,,??
