Before the time of Pope Innocent the 3rd (1198) there was no solemnization of marriage in the church, but the man came to the house where the woman resided and led her to his own house, which was all the ceremony used .

Let's hope they wrote down who married whom, or it might get confusing, especially if the man was a bit worse for wear!!
