Please can anyone let me know how to find out if a descendent has left a will?

Hi Bridget
I think the only way to find out for sure is to apply for it,, You have to give the date of death and pay..(i thinks its £5). If they dont have any record they will write and tell you but you wont get your money back,
Iv applied to York for any wills i have needed.

If you're located in London you can search for yourself, pay £5.00 in approx 1 hour and you can walk away with a copy. If not they have a 'by post' service - see the above link.

Bridget, Birmingham Central Library have a list of Wills from 1851 onwards (but NOT very recent ones). They cover all of England (and possibly Wales). Just gives name, age and address of deceased person, the Executors and approx gross amount.
It is free to look. I should think that other archives will hold the same information.
If you find that the person involved DID leave a will, you would then have to send to York for it. At least you will be able to give accurate dates, to enable them to search more quickly.
