Hi all, I am having a family visitor and her husband on Monday afternoon. She is patronising and condescending, and should know better in her position, and she gets me nerves on edge.
Burning question is, should I, this weekend, clean and polish as if there is no tomorrow, or, should I adopt an attitude of 'take me as you find me', and hope they do not stop long.
Off now to M***sons to rest me nerves. Yes I did say rest, and not test, as, compared to my dilemma, boy, oh boy, will it be a rest.
Julia in Derbyshire

PS. It is akin to having a visit from royalty

Take me as you find me is my attitude...lol. When she arrives give her a can of polish and a duster :-)) Ask her to whip round with it whilst you make a cuppa.

Why should you change, it's your house!

Sue (grumpy when it comes to adhering to others expectations).

Be delightful and without a care in the world.

Don't let her rattle you Julia - be reading "Sons and Lovers" when she arrives.

Persey

Edit: Actually I have a very good book that I would leave lying around for people like her it's called "Women who Kill"

Do no more than you would do for any other visitor, pleasant or unpleasant. It's your home and not for her to judge or criticise. Let her take you as she finds you. If she doesn't like it, she might not bother coming again hehehe

I wouldn't put myself out much for such a visitor.

I would supply tea and biscuits and a comfy chair but that's all.

If she casts a disparaging eye around, just say 'Sorry about the mess but I live here'

I agree with everyone... and Persephone, you made me laugh!!

Julia, you are who you are... I bet you pack more into your time at home each week than she does in a month.

I have a sister a bit like that... well, she appears like that. You could eat off her floors, her 15 year old cooker still looks brand new even though it is well used.... and she looks dreadful, worn out all the time. At one time, I would tidy up when I knew she was coming... but I no longer do... and do you know what? She said the other week she loves coming to my place because she always feels so relaxed!!

So, don't do anymore than you would normally do over the weekend. If it rains, well, maybe, but if the sun is shinng, get out and about.

If she doesn't like it, well, she needn't bother to visit again..... and that would be no great loss, would it?

Love

Julia, i won't mention a name lol but I used to have an occasional visitor and always made a huge effort to get the place as good as possible before she arrived... I stopped worrying so much when I was sent a dvd taken at their house, and showing it to be very messy and with a toilet roll featuring prominently on the shelf in the lounge lol

One of my cats keeps throwing up furballs, lol.... oh, and said sister just phoned, she is on her way for a cuppa and is then taking me out for an airing... when she sees Jethro's pawprints running along the worktops, she might change her mind about the cuppa, lolol!!

I would not invite anyone who is patronising or condescending to my home even if they ARE family members. Unless of course, they had lots of family history information to impart:) XX BC

Hi All, Back from M*****sons now, having had a Burger at the chuck wagon in B&Q carpark, so feel abit refreshed. I have read all your replies, and thank you very much for giving them.
I have decided to take your advice, and instead of spending all weekend being a slave to the duster and Mr. Muscle, I will do what I had planned. That is, tomorrow I shall carry on with me Cuprinoling me trellis, because I would rather do this than dust the parlour, my garden being as important to me as indoors, possibly even more so, particularly at this time of year.
This is not a very big house, but big enough for us two. However, this pair are rather big people, not fat, and take up alot of the space, and what with the condescending, patronising way of speaking, it can almost become claustrophobic.
Then there is me dog. She is only a Cocker Spaniel, eg not of big size, but she does rather think the parlour, is her domain, and resents visitors as much as we do. Coupled with that, she has just had two nights in the vet's having her feet done. I won't tell you how much it cost, but I have to have me corns done on the NHS. I just know she will not be in a happy mood, and will not take kindly to an extra two pairs of rather large feet, taking up her space.
Then there is the visitor herself. Having been a district nurse and midwife for 40 years, you would think she would know by now how the NHS works. But no. Everytime we speak on the phone, she must know all the latest on me bowel problems. I am wholeheartedly fed up of being reminded of it.
I think she needs to take a leaf out of her OH's book. He is so laid back, he is unbelievable, and just acts normal. He has, in recent years retired from a position, which I cannot go into too much detail, but let us just say, he was alot nearer to God, than I will ever be.
I think I will just have to grin and bear it, and hope the 'visit' does not last for too long. Then I can have a fag when they have gone, to settle me nerves, you know, and carry on with me Cuprinol. LOLOL
I'll be on and off the boards all weekend when I come indoors for me cuppa.

Julia, you have the perfect excuse, you know!
Just spray some polish around and say 'Would you believe it, I polished a little while ago and that volcanic dust has blown in and covered everywhere again!'

Enjoy doing what you want this weekend and if your female visitor doesn't like the place, tell her hubby to visit on his own, he sounds ok!

Midwife/District Nurse?

I wonder if she's the one who visited me when I had the kids in the '70's.

LOL, we used to breathe a sigh of relief when she'd gone, including the babies
