Eeegh!

Chippendale is a style of furniture.
The cartoon chipmunks Chip 'n Dale were a play on that word.
Some people have "backformed" the Chippendale in the furniture name to Chip 'n Dale, not knowing it's the other way around!

This sort of like an "eggcorn". An eggcorn is the name for words that people make up, or think they hear, that almost make sense. For instance, "tow the line" for "toe the line", "old timer's disease" for "Alzheimer's disease". "Eggcorn" is what some people manage to think they hear when they hear "acorn".

And the funny thing is - when I google

chippendale eggcorn

I come up with all kinds of ads for Chippendale furniture things with "eggcorn finials". !!!

Chip 'n Dale are two animated chipmunks created by The Walt Disney Company. Their names are a pun based on the name "Chippendale" (see Thomas Chippendale).

Heh heh.

My mum and dad used to collect them from their local paper, when they looked for auctions and such.

Not as good, but two of their favourite "for sale" items:

a chester drawers
and
a chip 'n dale table

spelled sic. ;)

I'll bet at least the wedding dress and encyclopedia caught an eye or two they might not have otherwise!
