I want to back up my FTM Info on to a memeory stick..

Now heres the problem.when the window comes up with """"REMOVABLE DISK """" it only comes up with Using a disc but I want the info to go in a memeory stick.

So how do I get it to go to the memory stick...instead of disc.

Thanks for your help....

Sue

just a suggestion,
open the memory stick to view folders.(it IS classed as a removeable disc, sometimes)
go into my computer and it should show the usb memory stick connection
ie right click on the icon, and it should open up
which version of FTM do you have? the ealier versions only allowed backup to floppy....

I managed mine one time by actually dragging the ftm family file onto the stick.
you may be able to copy and paste the family file to the stick
Bob
but inspector green pen may have a better suggestion.....

sue, goto my computer,
and see if the stick is showing there,
open your FTM and goto export family file,ENTIRE file,
when it asks where to it will ask for a new name, (Ive just done mine as 4th july version 2010)
it will at the top of the drop down ask where to. click on the arrow and it SHOULD show your stick, highlight that and then click save.

let me know if it works for you, it did for me......

Bob,

On""" My Computer""" it just says Removable Disk so I presume that is the memory stick.

Have done what you have saidbut how long does it take to download to the stick...cos it only took about 5 seconds which I presume is too short for the lenght of my tree.

Drag and drop the FTM data file is the way I save mine, or export as Bob suggests, either way should work. Just tested to an old stick - took about 30 seconds for a 32mb FTM file with around 13,000 names on it. A newer stick might transfer the data much quicker.

However, if you need to retrieve your data, you will not be able to open the file with FTM directly from your stick. To do so you must first copy the file back to your hard disk from your memory stick etc and open it from there.

The reason for this is that FTM requires to have the file open when it is running as it continually updating information to it as you add and change records and it can only do this when the file is on your hard disk.

of course you are right there IPG, a backup is only a save of a snapshot of the FTM state at the time....
the real time state is what is actually in use on the hard drive...........and a backup is always behind the real time state...
but at least you have the majority of your work saved, if the hard drive crashes.........

Sue open my computer, and your stick, find the icon for the saved FTM file and right click and open properties it should tell you the name, saved date and file size.
i didnt time my recent save but it was around 10 seconds or so.....I only have around 650 names.....but loads of notes n stuff..approx 38 Mbs.........
