My dad is swanning it in Portugal, and has left instructions to my mum to pay a specific amount into his Post Office Account... he signed a paying in slip (old one) before he left, just in case, but... the local Post office, which deals with everything and isn't a small sub post office... have said that she can't do that. She doesn't want to draw any money out, just pay some in.

Does anyone know whether it is possible for her to do this? I would have thought paying in would have been ok....

Confused of South Wales, lolol

Reading that it looks as though you can't pay in actual cash but have to pay money in with a cheque or debit card.

Thanks everyone... his pension goes into it... and my mum is none too clear, but she is talking of going into the town centre tomorrow as the Post Office near her have refused to take it, but I am not sure why... she has early stage dementia (mild form, fortunately, as well, but she does forget why she is doing things) and has now got no sight in one eye, which she is trying to adjust to... so her traipsing around Cardiff city centre is a bit of a nightmare.

My father is very secretive about his account... she just has the paying in slip, with his signature on it. I will try and get all the details from her over the phone... it looks like I will be able to transfer money direct from my account into his, then, if that is the case?

I do so hope he is furious that I will have his bank details. He causes havoc... this happens almost every year, which is why he doesn't tell anyone until the day he goes. I shall be wiping the floor with him when he gets back, I am livid with him.

Last year he made a phonecall to my mum, saying his wallet had been *stolen* and not telling anyone exactly where he was... in Spain, and not in his usual place in Portugal.

Sorry for the rant, but I am really really cross with him. Furious, actually.

Thank you all for the info.... these calls of his, I should expect them now... but of course, they still send me into a bit of a panic... he can manage himself, but my mother gets all agitated and wound up about it, and worries about him... and that gets me going, then.

I will have a good look at those sites, now... and thank you so much for the input. I'll let you know if I get it sorted! Or if I have throttled him, you'll read about it ;¬))

Thanks Piglets Pal... that is how I read it as well... he will be furious that I have the bank account details and serve him right...

He wants my mother to put in cash, so that he can access it straight away, presumably... so a bank transfer wouldn't pay in quickly enough for him. However... he is just going to have to lump it... because that is the way he'll get it... or not at all.

Grrrr.

Thanks again...

If you are making a transfer from an online account the money may be available immediately.

I don't know what the maximum is but do know that £500 can be transfered for immediate access and that was with 2 different banks not 2 accounts within the same bank.

Thanks Christine.... I do hope so.. anyway, it looks like this is an old, and now defunct account... it bears no relationship to anything modern, it would seem... and my attempts at BACS transfer have failed...

Santander is closed until tomorrow, my mother has strict instructions not to do a thing until I have been on the phone to them... and then we will sort it out. Also, he hasn't phoned back, which means he isn't desperate, yet. Not that he would be... he has friends there, stays in one of the apartments free of charge, and is treated as family if he wants to be (he finds that a little bit restricting to his freedom, though, lol) so he will not starve, and he will not be sleeping rough.

I really am gonna thump him one when he gets back, lolol

Well, we are almost sorted, and it is now down to him. The account is an old and now defunct account. He has to phone me with his current account details and I will then do a BACS transfer, if he still wants pennies. lol

I reckon he will come home.

Thank you everyone for your input... please write to me when I am in prison for throttling him, lol ;¬))

I remember the wallet saga from last year and can understand why he makes you so cross having to sort things out for your Mum.
Glad you're nearly sorted.

MrDaff Report 5 Jul 2010 19:16

Thank you, Ann! lol

Gwyn, this is a very regular occurrence, and he has been bailed out by us numerous times. My mum won't go with him any more. I fall for it every time, because I am aware that one day it will be for real. He is a bit of a chancer, and always gets through what he takes in the first couple of days. But, he is almost 78, so I just can't bring myself to say, *tough* when mum gets so het up. I wouldn't mind if he was stupid, or a bit dim or senile, but he is none of those, he is sharp, intelligent and has more than his share of marbles.

No phonecall yet though, so my guess is he is not as desperate as he made out... his friend would let him phone for nothing, and my BiL's family live near, and are wonderful, so they would let him phone, too.

Thanks again everyone.
