I contacted Ancestry and this was their reply:-

Due to privacy issues the 1916 - 2005 are not complete. We will be updating as soon as the UK Government allows. The years that we don't have are from 1983 forward. We will be adding these as they are released to us.


So they are NOT complete!

it is always possible, as happened right from the beginning of records in 1837, that some records were not transferred either from the church OR from the local Registry Office to GRO


or that they were just plain lost


or that one or more transcribers missed out a record or two




so it is possible that there are records missing, but no-one knows that they are!

Are the Births, Marriages & Deaths on Ancestry for 1916 - 2005 complete?

PS, I've just seen this on Ancestry:-

So we’ve taken the bold step of commissioning an "every name" transcript of all GRO indexes from 1916 – 2005. The transcribed Birth index took 400,000 man-hours (that’s 187 years!) to transcribe and has added almost 62.8 million extra records to the 71 million already made available through the partnership with FreeBMD. And this is the only place online where they’re available all in one place and fully searchable by name.

So I assume it is complete. Yet I have found some names missing.
