Hello,
Ive been trying to find out who my grandmothers family was but dont have much to go on.
Ive do have photos of my grandmothers uncle and cousins and my grandfather in uniform But I dont know for certain and dont know whos who. So I thought maybe someone out there knows enough about uniforms/insigne help me work out.

On one of the photos the soldier has a 1914-1915 star and two other medals and 170.L on his collar, two other, two just have squared caps with badges and holding are holding a small horse whip (RFA?) . A third has a more baggy cap and a star shape badge.
They all come from Newport Wales and served in the South Welsh Borderers or RFA. The photos were taken in studios, one is marked Newport another is Birmingham.
My grandmothers cousin was Alexander Dillon who served in the 40th Welsh regiment and was killed in action in Flanders 1915. His brother Percy served in the RFA. Her uncle was Garret Mahoney who joined the SWB in 1882-1892 and also served in WW1. Further Ive got a 1914-1915 star of my grandfather JH Preece Gunner RFA, according to the medal rols he served in Egypt. I found the photos once belanged to my grandparents so the people on them must be these four.

Thankyou!

Sally

RFA is probably ..........Royal Field Artillery

The letter L is a prefix to regimental number relating to SWBorderers and some Royal Artillery, according to Army abbreviations.

sally there are plenty of military forums which you can post on and they will be able to help especially if you can download the photographs.
