No doubt it was a wonderful time - for those who had.

Shame those who hadn't, didn't quite share the same enthusiam

and here we go again...

Carry on ranting, Elizabeth.

Dear Sue

Hello

Ah yes, the 1980's, where values and qualities were as false and unrealistic as the big hairdo's and the make up!

During this decade, this country was driven apart into those who had and those who would get nothing.

I think this laid the foundations for many of the problems that exist today.

The attitude of the "Yuppies" was me, me and more me.

A lot of young people have said to me about it being a fantastic time.
No, it was not a great time!

People only believe this because they look back on it without having the experience of living through it.

Sorry, I am ranting a bit! Must be the heat!

Take gentle care
Very best wishes

Hi Elizabeth

I'm so much with you - I'm afraid we're going back to the 1980s, where the only people who are worth helping are ourselves - individually

Dear Suzian

Hello

Hope you are well and okay.

I am very glad you posted this topic.

Yes, I remember it very well.

For me, Bob Geldof has always been one of the people I most admire and respect.

The point of Live Aid was for people to help others which was a
quality not in abundance in the 1980's.

20 years later, in July 2005, Bob Geldof and many others organised concerts around the world for the Make Poverty History campaign.

This resulted in the cancellation of much of third world debt.

I think Live Aid showed us what was possible if people worked together.

Take gentle care
Very best wishes
xx

Hi Amanda

This was the first introduction I had to a world beyond mine. It may not be much, but it was the images on Live Aid that prompted me to be aware of the fact that a whole load of people in the world were starving - which no amount of exposure on the news could've done at the time.

I hope it stopped me being a 100 per cent greedy person, and taught me a bit of compassion

Maybe, Foggy but if "a lot of the money raised is syphoned off by greedy corrupt heads of state" then a lot more isn't.

I'm proud of what Live Aid achieved. To my mind, it was something to see, to watch musicians showing a bit of compassion when our elected leaders showed absolutely ziltch

Hello Sue.......three days after the date you've mentioned I had my first baby , so at the time I was wrapped up in my own world but I do remember all the images of the starving children : (

Have we learned anything ? .......not sure that as a species we have . The compassionate folk of the world will always try to help and the greedy ones will cream off the top.........but I don't think that is anything new .

YEP, a lot of the money raised is syphoned off by greedy corrupt heads of state, they all drive round in their mercs while their people starve.

Believe it or not, it was described as "the day rock and roll changed the world" - 13th July 1985

I remember the Cars "Drive" and those heart-rending pictures of starving young children.

Do you think we've learned anything?
