More than it is, not just this site or FB the Net on a whole?

This site should have mods who are part of the community, it's common practise on most chat forums so GR are a tad out of tune or cant be bothered to spend the money, the latter me thinks.

FB have just launched their application where under 16's (i think it is) can apply to CEOP (the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre). if they are being hassled etc etc.

Certain gov agencies across the world have software that monitors traffic across the internet that searches for key words an example being an English boy was arrested after a tip off from theFBI to the British Police because he mentioned "guns and other stuff" on his Facebook page. So there are things in place.

On the whole I don't have a problem with the 'internet ' as a whole, be nice for it to be policed for spam and virus's etc but a good programme does that.
I can't see how a syastem could ever be put in place to stop the 'weird ones' even individual websites can't do that. Unless of course they have IP addies pinpointed to a set address and then it's a freedom of individuality at risk. Not forgetting the Hide IP programmes.

Whirls the panic button on FB (which they fought against before giving in) is only good if the child reports

As you have said there is already un beknown to us certain traffic moniters in place.

Yes its the " weird ones " that bother me

Uzzi it's actually an "application" not a "panic button" as such on FB that kids have to "download" it isnt put there automatically. FB are going to mailshot/promot it to all under 16's (i think thats the age) and encourage them to download the application so it is on their profile/Home page. Once its downloaded and ONLY THEN, they can hit a button and report anything dodgy, so you could, at that stage I guess call it a panic button.

But seriously I can't see how they can be stopped with people reporting them no matter what measures you put in place the internet is a non-facial untruthful place for the weird ones. How can a site even like this say sorry you can't join you ain't old enough if they say they are 18 then they are!

The solution announced today is not a panic button - it's an app. It is something every major brand has had, in the form of a page or an app, on Facebook for some time - but that public agencies don't have the marketing resources to come up with. This project took two months.
Facebook say the app combines its expertise on technology and marketing with Ceop's in online safety. This is not a 'reverse ferret' on the company's stance that a panic button is not an effective solution; it still holds that one button published on every page of the site will attract too many false reports and create too much work for Ceop. What it does do is give Ceop the chance to put its logo, which is recognised by most UK schoolchildren, on an official page and use the virality of Facebook to promote the service.

On the downside, because users have to actively add this app to their profiles to use it, the viral success of the app depends on how attractive it is.

Whirls I hadn't gone into it that much as I don't have children, nor or am I ever likely going to worry about underages on my FB, but I did read the news about it which called it a 'panic button' Hence my reason for calling it that.

But even so it's only good if the child or parent downloads the application and if once downloaded the child uses the said application.

Thank you for that Whirls I did actually understand exactly what you meant by application the 1st time round.

It doesn't alter the fact that the child has to report whatever and they could with out the application if they wanted to.

I am not a facebook user, but in instances where a google search has linked me to a facebook comment/ or page I have often been disgusted by what is written there.....

I think that there should be a measure in place to monitor the appalling foul language used in print by children apparently of school age,

and adults should know better!!

OH may dispute you on this Hayley. He did tell me today I was weird !

There is only way on FB, at present (to my knowledge) that "anyone/kids" can report abuse on FB Uzzi as there's a box you fill out and send off at just a click of a button. Trouble is too many hit the button for no real justifiable reason, (apparently) and therefore many do not get investigated at all cos there are far too many!

The good thing about this new application is that anything reported through it goes straight to CEOP who are independent to FB (but work with them) and they will investigate "each" report received, hence its an app and not just a button that sits there for anyone to just hit. Any added extras that helps to protect kids on line has got to be a good thing. Have a good evening Uzzi:))

Bob I can understand your horror at some of the things written not just on FB but on the net. But that language is nothing that isn't used on the streets for the kiddies to hear.

If it's worse than that then I have to wonder as a non FB user what you was googling for to find that reaction !

But it's still the same whether an application or not (Bebo and My Space already use it) it's only good if the child pushes./clicks/uses it . Yes I appreciate that by being part of Child protection may, just may make the extra few shout out.

Many kids lured to their deaths wouldn't use it because they don't think there is anything wrong. So another child might see something wrong, but that isn't an open forum ,

No Uzzi its the usual efin n blindin.....bad enough on the street but in print, is a lot more off putting,
I google the family name at times and this leads to facebook pages......nothing out of the ordinary doing that.......
when I was at work I was dismayed to hear young male apprentices using street language in front of female aprentices, but as you say its almost natural these days..........maybe I am too old but in MY day it wasn't done, to swear in front of a lady........
