I have to ask ....are they certificates that you've sent off for since your interest in genealogy ?

And isn't it just the best thing to have the originals in your hands : ))

And let that be a lesson to us!

My grandmother died about 15 years ago; my grandfather had died around 1980. My little brother has had their big oak dining room set ever since. It's been moved from city to city and apartment to apartment. A couple of months ago, something stuck to the back of the cabinet inside the lower part of the buffet caught his eye, and he had no idea why he'd never seen it before. He got it out, a large envelope, and inside was a big photograph of dozens of men at big long tables at either a printers' union or a Masonic gathering, I forget, from probably about 1930. Apparently nobody else could pick out my grandfather without a lot of study, but I saw him immediately -- right down front, with a big old grin on his face just like he always had.

The moral of our stories: never ever get rid of anything. ;)

I am lucky enough to have a heap of " old papers " ........apparently my G.Grandmother used to keep all the " important " paper work in her carpet bag during the blitz.........it was deemed so important that it was kept by subsequent generations.........hence me having them now .

Well done Dizzi for getting in that skip ( I'd have done the same thing ) and yes Janey is right .........never throw anything away .At least without searching it properly first : )

When my FIL passed away OH's brother had dad's old briefcase. He was going to throw it away because "it's full of old rubbish" but handed it to OH first. We left it for awhile and then we sat down with it. Two original birth certificates, a marriage certificate, two photos of dad when he was in the National Fire Brigade in London and then in Stockton, a booklet with very very old licenses, his demob papers, references from an old job, certificates from his work in the fire brigade. It's was incredible and when we showed BIL he still said it was old rubbish!!
