Just been listening on Radio 4 and my did it bring back memories. 1946- 1951 we children would rush in at 6 45 to listen. Dick was portrayed by Noel Johnson, then Duncan Carse, and Gordon Davies but the voice of Noel Johnson was the one I remember most, I could pick it out in any other character he played on the radio. The theme tune was Devils Gallop and when I hear this I go back to being a 7 year old. The Archers finally took over the spot in about 1951. I was very upset at losing Dick Barton but gradually began listening to The archers and still am a fan to this day. By the way does anyone remember Mrs Dales Diary, the harp music if played today takes me back to walking in from school at 4 15 pm. Ahh those were the days. Elaine.

Elaine - I am of the same vintage, and was a huge fan of Dick Barton, wish I had noticed that was on today.
Never actually listened to Mrs Dales Diary , but my mother did, and the line "I'm very worried about my Jim" which I believe was frequently said on that programme, became a standard joke in our house at the time.

I mentioned Dick Barton on another thread recently, also "Dan Dare" a serial I never missed.........Happy Days.

Dick Bartons on! Everyone disappears from the street.
Was a fan of Mrs Dales diary too. Gave up listening to The Archers about 14 yrs ago, when it became less involved with the countryside.

Remember "Listen with Mother" and "Uncle Mac's favourites" on Saturday morning. My husband listened to the first episode of The Archers sitting on his Grandad's knee, we listen every evening.

It's good to know that others have happy memories of Dick Barton. Yes the streets emptied at 6.45pm I suppose that also saved our parents from having to call us in for bathtime. I still listen to the home service, oops radio 4. The radio sustained us through the war years and the years of austerity afterwards. I often think when they say they cannot afford a higher government pension for us over 65 do they realise how we had to go without from 1939 to well into the 1950s. We didn't have toys, bikes etc our parents couldn't afford them. Then we worked from 15 until we married brought up our kids and at the same time worked part time, I am still working part time now at 71. Elaine.
