The Hazzards of campsite living

or beware of the BBQ ! ?

On Tuesday there was a fire on the campsite that I live on (over the residential side) The parcela's are 85m2 and often are build on side by side. with very few inches of gaps. As is the fire was on parcela's that had static vans with ground next to them.
Even so 4 parcela's and their casas were completely destroyed leaving nothing but blackened twisted metal bits, (you wouldn't have even guessed they had had caravans on them a further 2 parcela's have been gutted inside and 2 more suffering from smoke damage unknown how many from water damage. The only reason why more didn't suffer was they way the wind was blowing there was a field across the 'roadway' and to the side was an empty parcela with just a transit van on it (the trannie is no more).
The fire brigade took only 14mins to make the site and a further 10 minutes to reach the back roads due to illegally parked cars which they had to smash windows of to get into them.

Amazing to watch was the police helicopter with it's water bucket ferrying water from the sea and uploading over (after the main blaze was out) .

One of the parcela's destroyed was one that I was hoping to rent but the owners hadn't got back to the company so I have accepted another. (the owners also own the trannie van parcela) .
It is unofficially said that it was a BBQ that went out of control, (1 version) another version said that a neighbour saw a pot smouldering under a caravan (not static) and went to hose it down when it went whoosh (oil in there??)
The unofficial, official version is that the police and fire are saying arson .....FGS this happened at 5pm BBQ time for a lot of people. and for those that aren't BBQing they are at the beach, but it's a time of year when the Spanish are in force in their holiday homes. D sector is heavily Spanish.
There was no major injuries ..... just some poor chap who now has no home (one of the 2 gutted from the inside) he's 70+ yrs old recently lost his wife and live's here all year round.

The papers report that the guardia arrived quickly on the scene due to being on the site after an incident when a chap died in the mar menor mmm now that happened at 12pm ..the 60yr chap who couldn't swim took an inflatable dinghy out on the mar menor ,overturned and drowned. Area rescued located the body after his son has swam ashore for help.

The Guardia where actually in the bar supping coffee at 5pm when the call went out and arrived at the scene with coffee cups ...bless 'em

There are many jokes about ...ie if it's not hot enough go to sector D and all that and I admit my humour has added it's fair share (especially as the company we are renting thro' is called 'Hotspotz' ) .
BUT it does show you the dangers of campsite living, even just in summer.
Statistically to be fair, that is the sites only major fire that is known a previous fire 12years ago started in a home and was contained to that 1 home Frightened thought all statics run with gas bottles (and I did see 1 very blackened bottle) (yes I went down there the following day but only 'cos I had to see some-one :-) ) imagine if it had been a windy day (which it can be even when hot) as others have said if the wind was blowing up the site and inwards many more would have gone up.

Obviously the parcela on D with the 'hot-tub' wasn't for me, but I have talked OH into buying me a water feature when we move. (more about that in another thread). Scarey, scarey thought if they had said yes I might have been living in there !! If so I would be destitute now, with only 2 dogs and the clothes I stood up in.

As said nobody was hurt, but at least 3 of those damaged were homes, (to my knowledge).

makes you think ?

Thanks Ann,
It actually took me until last night 24hrs later to realise I could have been living in one of the parcela's. Not just at a later date but now because the parcela was vacant and not needed and we asked after it a month ago, We really could have been living there.

edit to say although I could have been there that isn't what this thread is about.
It's the Hazzards of campsites

DIZZI WITH WIND THIS FIRE COULD HAVE WIPED OUT A 1000 + PARCELA,S OR AT LEAST A SOUTH EAST RATHER THAN NW WOULD HAVE TAKEN OUT 800 HOMES ..THESE ARE NOT TENTS THEY ARE HOMES.

Gossip on the street which I only listen to with 1 ear ...

The law and fire thought it was arson, the street think it was children playing ......

I think I would prefer a BBQ gone wrong, No doubt the truth will out, but what a horrible way of disclaiming arson. Strange no children were mentioned until today when the arson claim has been made semi public by the fire brigade. (Questions asked etc)
