By and large Joy, I think they do. They have to face all sorts of people and situations. They are, after all, someones husbands and sons, and I would not like to think sons and grandsons of mine had to face what they do to put a crust on their table. The OH is well past police retirement age, so no chance there.
I do have a cousin that was a prison officer in some of the top tough prisons. He was attacked once, and now in his early 70's has difficulty walking, has a disabled parking badge and needs hip replacements, as a result
Sometimes the most needy professions are the most dangerious in this day and age, and are not for the feint hearted.

Some people slate the Police, but try thinking of a society without them. Yes, at times, they may not get it right, but on the whole they do. They have a tough job in a tough world. They deserve the utmost respect imho.

It depends on the situation they are dealing with,,,some leave a lot to be desired, I'm sure if they dealt with some situations differently instead of a bullying tactics would get shown more respect.

I think that on the whole they do an excellent job, but there are always a few bad apples. As has been said, all without guns most of the time, thats why it looks so horrific to see armed policemen in some situations, we are not used to it.

I think they do a very difficult job, and are at times faced with some terrible situations. I couldn't do it. My brother has recently retired from the Police, and some of the situations he has had to face don't bear thinking about.

In the course of his 30 yrs with the Met he has been threatened by yobs on a regular basis, been knifed once, beaten up a few times, had his foot run over by a joy rider, and was once threatened with a gun in his face.
Yes, they are taught to deal with these situations, but how much can the mind take? How about entering a house when the occupant has just blown their head off with a shotgun?

When he was in 'Traffic' he saw some terrible things on our roads and motorways, including various mangled body parts from car crashes, especially those on the M25.

Gruesome? I couldn't do that job for all the tea in China.

Oh, and there was that time a nutter came up to him sprinkling petrol from a can and waving a lighter in his hand - in a crowded shopping mall. My brother recieved a bravery award for dealing with that crazy, disarming the idiot of his petrol can, and so avoiding the shopping centre going up in flames along with himself!!

All in a day's work? I take my hat off to them.

My own dealings with them (although slight) have not been positive, but I think that, on the whole, they do a good job. There are good, bad, average and excellent staff, just like in any other force.
