SINGULAR MAINTENANCE CASE AT WIGAN:-

On Monday, at Wigan, RALPH LOWE was brought up for arrears of his wife’s maintenance.

In the course of the hearing it was stated that the prisoner had married another woman at Heaton Norris, Stockport, and that he had been dealt with for bigamy by one of her Majesty’s Judges.

Prisoner’s solicitor said that he had only earned 11s. in six weeks, and was not able to maintain his wife.

The police deposed that prisoner’s father was a property owner, and prisoner was committed to gaol for two months.

DARING FEAT.—

On Tuesday last a workman, named JAMES MATHEWS, performed the intrepid feat of ascending to the summit of the cathedral spire of Salisbury for the purpose of oiling the vane, which is at an altitude of 404 feet from the ground.

The feat was witnessed by a large number of persons, and was accomplished by means of small iron handles which are firmly fixed to the exterior of the spire.

Before descending he mounted the cross above the vane, at at that dizzy height stood upright upon it.

He had a better head for heights than my OH who doesn't even like going up a ladder. Nowadays of course he would be so tied up in H&S tape that he wouldn't be allowed to do it.
