Sounds to me as if they made the lenses for glasses and binoculars, that sort of thing. the lenses would have to have been turned to shape.

In the census records for the 1800's three of my husband's ancestors were described as optical turners and one was a Master optical turner. What exactly did they do? Can anyione help me on this one?
