has anyone any tips on finding someone on a census? i have searched the 1901 census extensively but no trace of my grt grandparents. i have tried name variations but no luck it's very frustrating especially when they show up on every other census inc 1911! 1901 is the one i really need as hopefully it will have information on it vital to my research.

I know how you feel Jill.
I am still looking for one of mine, and have been for at least TWO YEARS.
Just keep searching and do what you are doing... ask for help.
There will be someone out there who 'knows' something.
AND... when you find them , ask them about my G.G.Grandfather, will you? ;-0)
Good luck.

More often than not they are there somewhere , some are so wildly mistranscribed, others have been put down as having the surname of
previous entry so that's matter of trawling through the images really, if you know the area they lived. ( that said I have a 'lost ' one also)

If you want me to look I'm always willing to give it a go lol

I can't find a birth for the daughter. I believe Whitchurch is in Shropshire.

Yes, whitchurch is Shropshire,
Can't find Ivy in 1901 either!
Lol she's got a good one here!!!!!

Jill

Jill Report 27 Jul 2010 15:53

yes they married in 1893 at chester, on 1891 census mary was at home with her parents in bradenheath. ivy the daughter was my granny who we are pretty sure was "adopted" by mary and william and that is what i am trying to find out, if she was with them on 1901 census. as legal adoption didn't start until 1927 it makes things very hard when you come up against this sort of thing.
thanks all who are looking for me, i appreciate it

There are 3 Ivys born in Whitchurch in the 1901 of the right age. All of them are still with their parents in 1911.

Back to the drawing board!

I'm a bit confused here! lol

Mary Emma is down as being born Colemere in 1911 which is Shropshire...

but Mary Emma with parents is born Hanmer Flintshire...

edit oh ok Hanmer just over Welsh border from Whitchurch ...got a bit lost on the map there lol......

Jill

Jill Report 27 Jul 2010 16:28

colemere is in ellesmere shropshire, mary was born there then the family moved to bradenheath hanmer flintshire, these days however hanmer is in shropshire so if the boundaries changed over the years maybe at one point colemere was under hanmer. her birth certificate says colemere ellesmere though.
confusing or what?

I'm not that far away Jill, but not lived here long...so when I think of Flints I think north Flints...which I had sort of assumed as they married in Chester.

Janice

Janice Report 27 Jul 2010 18:06

The Chester registration district covers a huge area - not just Chester itself. It goes into Cheshire as well as flintshire.

Please can someone with findmypast look at Charles and Hannah Beavan in 1911 (aged 35) and see if Ivy Beavan is with them.

She's an Ivy of the right age who I cant account for and doesn't seem to have died.. Could be just mistranscribed.

Yes, thanks Choccy.
That blows that theory! And I've found that Ivy too now :-(.

All the Ivys seem to be accounted for in 1911. Wonder if the name was changed when she was adopted.

Don't think bmds are going to be useful here. A christening might help.

Jill, do you have Ivy's marriage cert? What does it say on that? Or does her death cert have an alternative name given?
