It would make a huge difference to Marham and surrounding area if this happened. How much would it cost to keep them safe and not deteriorating, if needed would they be ok after time being mothballed?

I hope not, they are just awesome planes, I pray that everyone connected with the plane doesn't end up loosing their jobs and the planes end up on the scrapheap.

Bad for Norfolk if this happens

RAF Tornado jets could be grounded

Last updated: 30/07/2010 13:12:00

RAF Tornado jets could be grounded to save £7.5bn, in a move which could place thousands of jobs at risk in Norfolk.

Today's Times claimed proposals to moth-ball the 650mph bombers, drawn up under a wide-ranging review of defence spending, were “finding favour”.

It said the government would save more money by scrapping the air force's 120 Tornado aircraft than withdrawing its counterpart the Harrier.

Defence sources dismissed the story as “pure speculation”. An MoD spokesman said all areas of spending were being scrutinised under the Strategic Defence Spending Review, which aims to cut the overall military budget by between 10 and 20pc.

“It's one of a number of options,” an MoD spokesman said. “Everything that the armed forces possess is being reviewed, costed and put on the table at the moment.”

But The Times claimed a meeting of service chiefs has already decided that one of the RAF's fast jets would be sacrificed.

Tornados have been the backbone of the RAF for 30 years, during which they have seldom been far from the front line in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

RAF Marham houses four squadrons of Tornados, along with ancillary squadrons such as aerial imaging, armaments, and engineering.

Thousands are employed on the base, while both they and families living in and around Marham are vital to the local economy.
