Murder by Soldiers

Five men, named William HUGHES, Joshua CARTER, John DUFFIN, and Michael WELSH, 53rd Regiment, and Thomas DODWELL, 52nd Regiment, were remanded to-day (Monday), at Chatham, on a charge of murdering Thomas HILL.

Continuous quarrels have taken place lately between the Royal Marines and the men of the 53rd Regiment.

On Saturday night one of these took place, and some men in the 53rd on going home were heard to say they would kill the first marine they met. They afterwards saw two Marines, and killed one of them named Thomas HALL by kicking him in the head.

NOTE:- The paper did say Hall and Hill

SCHOOLGIRLS ATTEND MURDER TRIAL

London

Twenty sixth form girls from Shrewsbury Priory School attended a murder trial as part of their civic education.

They heard a man tried at the Shropshire Assizes for the murder of his wife.

The head mistress said that the visit had been arranged after careful consultation with the police. "We wouldn't allow the girls to attend just any trial," she explained".

FIVE MEN DROWNED .

The Penny Illustrated Paper and Illustrated Times (London, England), Saturday, August 02, 1902; Issue 2149.

Five men who were crossing the Tyne in a small boat on July 21, met with tragic deaths.

With three other workmen employed at the works on Scotswood Island, they got into a small boat to cross to the north side of the river to their homes.

All went well for a short time until a steam-tug passed, causing a swell which capsized the little boat and left the men all struggling in the water.

Three of them reached the shore with difficulty, although one was so exhausted that he was only brought round by the continuous application of artificial respiration.

The other five were drowned before assistance could be rendered.

Their names were John KNOX, John McKENZIE, John TROTTER, William MYERS, and John James JACKSON.
