Why DO flies fly around light shades even when they're not on?

I thought they only flew towards lights when they were on, or any source of light - perhaps they do it to **** us off???

I had a ruddy great moth in my shade last night, and do you think I could get at it .....NO ....it flew in and around the shade like a demented bat !!

But I got OH out of bed.......I didn't know who to laugh at him or the moth as they were both flying about !! LOL it took all of 15mins . but he caught the B***er ,was very kind to it and let it fly out the window, not sure it it had a wings left though .....
