Is "Charlie" a shortened version of "Richard"?

Mystery solved! He is my great great grandfather's, sisters, husband. I was thrown because he has the same last name, he is not a blood relation, it's just coincidence.

My father was a Charles, as was his father (and grandfather). Dad was called Chas, and his father was Charlie.

Just to confuse things, Dad's mother was named Charlotte. Thank goodness she was know as Lottie, rather than Charlie!

In your case, if 'Charlie' wasn't a family friend, I'd go with the suggestion that it was a 2nd name, or nickname.

How old is the photo? Old enough that you might pick Chales/Charlie Wood up on a census if you can take a guess at the area he came from? You might find he lived next door to relatives or something.

Well Charles is the obvious choice for Charlie,,but there is always room for the not Charles at all,but at a guess its what most would think it was short for...

"Uncle Charlie Wood" is written on the back of an old photograph of a man. I'm not sure where he fits in.

Charlie could be just a nick name from childhood and not related to a real christian name...,unless it was a second name used so not to confuse father and a son with the same names?

Richard is usually shortened to Rich.Rick,or Dick.but then could have been nicknamed Harry !
