Is "Charlie" a shortened version of "Richard"?

Mystery solved! He is my great great grandfather's, sisters, husband. I was thrown because he has the same last name, he is not a blood relation, it's just coincidence. |

My father was a Charles, as was his father (and grandfather). Dad was called Chas, and his father was Charlie. |

How old is the photo? Old enough that you might pick Chales/Charlie Wood up on a census if you can take a guess at the area he came from? You might find he lived next door to relatives or something. |
