I have a referee's whistle for just that purpose, and boy does it work!

But please, if anyone uses a whistle down the phone, please remember to remove said phone from your year first.....like I didn't the first time.

Just been reading this advice, having no idea about the TPS, i thought brilliant- i'll register, stop the 3-4 calls i get every day (usually automated) but not always.
However it seems that i have already registered ?????
Must have been in my sleep because i had never heard of TPS until today.
i'm very tempted to phone the number back, but that must be playing into their hands,
just googled the number( 08432764019) and i can register a complaint, but is this also a scam?
I never disclose any details .

What i do find distressing is that i am getting phone calls asking to speak to my OH who died two years ago.
When they ask if they can speak to him i usually say "only through a medium dear" and put the phone down.
Two weeks later they are on the phone again, asking the same question.
Aaaaagh!!!!

A lot of good advice already given, so mine may be superflous. I have an answering machine and I often ignore the phone. My friends and family know, and if they leave a message then I answer it. Any calls that do not leave a message,or the number is not known are ignored. Do you have a radio near the phone? If you answer a nuisance call, you can lay the handset by the radio. Can be very annoying listening to music, particularly if it is something you don't like!

If you can get their telephone number you can report the number to the telephone preference and they will stop them, I reported texts that kept coming through from a dating site to both of our mobiles. we have them on the tel preference as well as our home ex dir number. they were stopped!

We are with Telewest/Virgin and pay £2 per month to stop number withheld calls We very rarely get unsolicited calls now

That's a good idea Janey. Like a lot of older people my mother gets confused and I'm always a little concerned she will give some information to them that she shouldn't or buy something to get rid of them.

SueMaid, it's an important point - that everybody remember to register their older relations' numbers too. Tell them you're doing it and why, if you think you need to. ;)

And give them the script to read whenever *anyone* they have never done business with calls them about anything they have not asked for. "No, and do not call me again" covers it.

SueMaid Report 9 Aug 2010 22:06

In Australia we have a "don't call register". It's working very well now 2 weeks after I registered. I also registered my mother's because she didn't always understand what they were talking about and it worried her. If the odd call gets through I just say that we are registered and it's illegal to call our number - they hang up very quickly. The "don't call" website does say that charitable organisations and political party calls are exempt.

As said before, TPS ONLY stops calls from British call centres. These are foreign, coming from India...TPS doesn't stop them unfortunately. Again, like the recorded ones, they are giving debt advice, and again, TPS only stops cold selling anyway.

JaneyCanuck Report 9 Aug 2010 18:22

Florence61, you can try what I suggested above. ;)

Google the phone number, you may be able to find company info that will lead you to contact email addresses / telephone numbers.

Email and/or call demanding that they stop calling you.

It really has worked for me on a couple of occasions!

hi all, i have been registered with the tps for years and still get calls mostly from someone called money management on behalf of the government. when i said i am with the tps, the man said he wasnt selling me anything merely offering advice re my financial sitiuation. i said i did not ask you to call so please dont again. it goes quiet for a couple of weeks and then they start again. when i was with bt then i asked them and they said tps prevents direct selling, ie doulbe glazing, insurance etc but not aginst anyone offering advice which is what these companies claim to be offering, yeah right, we werent born yesterday were we!!!

it seems there is no real way to get rid of them unless anyone else knows better it seems

Do-not-call / telephone preference lists don't work for calls from outside the country. I have the same problem in Canada. Mostly, we here get calls from the US ... and people in the US get calls from Canada ...

First thing to do is google the phone number.

Googling that one, 08448466529, gets results on one of the usual sites I use: whocallsme.com.

http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/08448466529

Try reading there -- often people will have researched what the company doing the calling is and will post contact info.

I had one particularly annoying so-called market research company calling me from California last month, night after night. (I don't answer, usually, I screen by my answering machine, and when no one speaks, I google the number.)

I got the name of the company from whocallsme, and the link to its website. I went to the website and got the email addresses for every single manager/employee of the company. I sent an email (from an anonymous gmail account) to every one of them demanding that they stop calling me. I had a reply email sent by the most senior manager from his cell phone within minutes, assuring me the calls would stop. They did!

I think that may be an unusual case though. More often, these callers are really just plain scammers. When you tell them to stop calling / take you off the list, they swear at you. At least, that's what the ones in New Jersey and Florida do. ;)

Anyhow, here's what the most recent post about that phone number says:

-----------------------------------------------------

Capital Finance appear to be responsible for these calls, they're the UK owner of LionTel Info Solutions Pvt Ltd. See http://www.liontel.com/
Although of course the LionTel website doesn't state who the UK owners are.
This online CV gives the game away, look at the Customer Relationship section: http://in.linkedin.com/in/shahrushabh
[it says: "LionTel Info Solutions is the name of the Indian venture of the parent company namely CAPITAL FINANCE, which is based in Leicester, U.K."]

LionTel call themselves various names including Debt Advice Bureau, Crystal Debt Advice and the latest one is Galaxy Debt advice. They use various phone numbers, the latest one to call me is 0844 8466524, previously it has been 0161 2412080.

I gave the Indian Call centre false details (apart from my real phone number) a few months ago in an attempt to get put through the UK company and be able to trace it back. I was called directly a few days ago by Capital Finance in Leicester who used this false information. When pushed they told me they have an Indian call centre. I'd previously been assured by Capital that I'd been removed from their database, and they denied any knowledge of the cold calls from India.

Caller ID: 08448466529
Caller: Capital Finance/LionTel Info Solutions

-----------------------------------------------------

So there's somebody who really did the homework.

Here is the website for Capital Finance:

http://www.capitalfinance.uk.com/
http://www.capitalfinance.uk.com/contactus.htm

You might want to call / email them. ;)

TW -- while I was googling, you beat me to it!

TPS only stops cold calling from british call centres....It won't stop these, trust me I know, I get them all the time asking for the previous tenant, and I've been PTS registered for years.

Google the number, you'll be surprised what comes up, but it's all based with Capital Finance, who have various debt companies under different names, it's still them.

They must get sick of being sworn and shouted at but they dont' give up, they just keep on ringing and ringing. The silent or disconnected calls are them too, testing the number to see what times you're there.
