Hi Meryl
have a look here

www.truecall.co.uk
it's a gadget that plugs in to your phone, also an answer machine, when phone rings a recorded voice says you have a call from ******* press 1 to accept or hash to zap,
easy to set up

Thank you all for the advice, mine has been going on for years also, so irritating!

Meryl my friend has been plagued with this type of call for years now, she has just got an answer phone, it's working well. If it's someone genuine she can pick up as they leave their message.

The latest was a scam alleging they were from her power supplier and saying they would credit £50 to her as she had overpaid if she would give them her bank details or credit card number!

You need to put your number on the Telephone Preference Service thingy. It may take a week or two to kick in but it stops all (most) cold-calling. The odd one that gets through can then be told that you're on the Telephone Preference Service and they will be reported if they ring again. Works for us.

I am so sick of this now, 3-4 times a day. Pick the phone up and there is a delay, I think it is an Indian call centre. I have had my phone number for 10 years and I am ex directory. They ask for someone who must have had the number before me. I keep telling them that I am not theat person and to stop calling and they hang up but still ring ! I have started telling them that the person they are asking for is dead and they still ring! They are debt advisors, 08448466529.
Does this happen to any of you and have you managed to stop them? I am not with BT.
