Annie from NZ Report 10 Aug 2010 03:09

Hi,

There is a case in the courts here in NZ now where a 29 yr old woman killed her 13 mth old son. Apparently she couldn't cope with 2 children. Put the baby boy in the bath with water up to his chest popped his toys in with him the walked out pulling the door almost shut. She went back a while later saw the baby was floating face down. Took him out and wrapped him in towels and put him on her bed and then went of facebook for 30 minutes till her partner got home and told him the baby was dead. I think it was him that called the ambulance.

I think it is disgusting what some people do to innocent little babies. Some people just don't deserve kids.

mother / parents ...

Homicides in which a parent kills a child or children and then themself are referred to as filicide-suicide.

Few studies focus on paternal filicide, the NCI said, with mothers "overrepresented". However unpublished data from the National Confidential Inquiry in the UK shows the *proportion of male perpetrators to be higher* at 64 per cent versus 36 per cent.

... An American study cited by the RCP charted 30 cases of filicide-suicide, committed by 20 men and 10 women between 1958 and 2002, found that 70 per cent of the mothers and 30 per cent of the fathers had a history of seeking psychiatric help. Only one of the 10 mothers was found to be psychotic.

The study argued that the mothers' main motivation was "altruism", a belief that killing the child would in some way relieve any real or imagined suffering.

The NCI study reported that while mercy killings and psychotic filicides dominate, other motivations were found to be unwanted children, accidentally fatal battering or abuse and spouse retaliation filicide. The latter - where the murder seeks revenge on a spouse – is rare but almost exclusively perpetrated by men. Around a fifth of filicide perpetrators take their own life.

Hi Bob,
I think statistics prove - it's, unfortunately, relations.

It beggars belief, doesn't it?
So selfish.
If the mother /parents can't cope, there are 'official' people she can turn to - as well as 'childline'.

been arrested for killing a child. Mother walked into a police station with her 2yr old in her arms. This is the sixth I can think of which has hit the headlines in past couple of weeks there are possibly more. What drives a parent to kill a child - sometimes it appears to be 'if I can't have them -you won't.
