Birth registered twice

I am helping a friend with his tree and we have found that in 1942 his birth was registered twice - once under his mum's first married name and then under his dad's name (they were not married at this time). These are both shown in the same quarter of that year. Following their marriage a note was added to the bottom of the page where he was registered with his father's name showing a reference number and saying 'see J62'. I understand this part of it but was it usual to register under both names, would the Registrar have advised this.

Quick answer - yes it's normal for it to be registered under both names.

It still happens now.

My step daughter is registered under both her father's and mother's names.

Oh, forgot to say - that for an unmarried mum registering a birth, the father would need to be present at the registration for his name to appear. So at least your friend knows that both parents went along to the Registrar.
