I'm "dogsitting" a beautiful well behaved 9 month old Labrador puppy for son and family and am horrified at some of the "dog toys" that are on sale.
I know that puppys chew everything in sight, so i bought her a large hard "chicken leg" toy to keep her occupied.
"safe for any breed and guaranted to give your dog hours of pleasure" it said on the package.
WRONG!!!
Within an hour she tore it to shreds, AND there was a squeaker inside. it was only when i saw her wretching that i realised she was choking-on the plastic squeaker, so shoved my fingers down her throat and managed to get her to bring it back up.
The "chicken leg" toy was much to big for a small dog to play with, so i wrongly assumed it would be ok for her.
Why do they put those dangerous sqeakers in, they should be banned.
I still go hot and cold at the thought of what may have happened.

Oh crumbs, lucky you were quick to notice.

My alsatians used to steal orange road cones , once they had separated the cone from the base they were disguarded !

I have a year old yorkie. She just loves her squeaky toys.Think she is too small and weak to get the squeaker out. Will watch her now though. Annie

I had to take my dog to the vets when he was a pup as he had swallowed a squeaker .I nearly had a dickie fit when I realised the toy was gone and so had the sqeaker. We think it eventually passed through. But very scary at the time.

Geordygirl and Lindsey, you've reminded me of my daughter's alsatian/collie cross.
If I took her into town when the market was on she'd always stop by the man selling pet food, and choose a treat for herself. She wasn't told she could - just did it!
I then had to pay for it.
It was put in a plastic bag, which I would carry.
She'd get a bit excited, and want the treat, - she showed her excitement by standing in front of me and barking!!
Have to admit it looked a bit like she was threatening me - but she was 'smiling'!!
I'd open the bag, she'd take it out, get distracted, drop it, I'd pick it up and put it back in the bag.
If I was lucky, she'd forget about it until we arrived home. if not, this scenario - barking - treat- dropping it would go on all the way home!!

We never gave her 'rubber' toys - her favourite treats were pigs ears, a huge roasted bone, or a tennis ball!.

Maggie-what a wonderful story-love it, wonder sometimes who trains who!!!!Tess's tennis ball was shredded in ten minutes, went in bin straight away.
Lindsay-road cones!! oh my, obviously size no problem then...............
Jane/Grannieof 10.....
Yes its a awful thought that these toys can cause so much trouble, son left a cotton plaited knotted toy, that was shredded in 5 mins, i had to bin that as well in case she choked on the bits of cotton.
I make sure now if i have to leave her for a while on her own i make sure she has chewy sticks only.
Can you imagine three grandchildren coming home from holiday and me having to tell them something bad had happened to their beloved puppy.

Grannie,
Maybe your dog bit off more than she could chew!!!
When my daughter's dog had pigs ears, we had to make sure my cats didn't get hold of them.
That sort of shows the the hierarchy - one enormous dog - 3 cats - and we had to protect the dogs treats from the cats!! LOL

oh yes, best ever treat was a 3 foot motorway cone, that took a fortnight to kill !

One daring escapade they brought home a live tortoise and freshly cooked leg of lamb ! [partners in crime] which they weren't allowed to keep. They were sent to bed grumbling !

We had daughter's dog and her boyfriend's dog one Christmas.
Boyfriends dog was huge and black - looked like a cross between an irish wolfhound and something else - but he wasn't the sharpest tool in the box!
We'd had Christmas dinner, and the remains of the turkey was cooling in the (turned off) oven.
Whilst we were in the living room, the pair of them went into the kitchen. We heard a 'thunk' noise, then daughter's dog came slinking back into the living room - looking a bit guilty.
I went into the kitchen - to find daughter's boyfriend's dog eating what was left of the turkey!!
We assume daughter's dog opened the oven door for boyfriend's dog - then realised it was 'wrong'.
He - being of little brain didn't realise the consequence of his actions - ie we weren't very happy and made shouty noises!!! LOL
He was of such little brain that shouty noises had little effect on him - and he didn't even object when the turkey was removed from his chops - he just looked confused!!

Sorry to laugh Maggie, but thats hilarious, just pictured the scene in my mind, who said that animals were dumb-clearly not the ones you had.........very cunning indeed.....

Susan-they annoy me as well, but i only heard three squeaks, and they were all in Tess's throat.

Well-i had better go to bed cos Tess has just toddled off in the direction of the bedroom-way passed her bedtime (and mine it seems.).................
