I do not know what my great grand dads ( Alfred Chambers ) mother or fathers names were, so hence i need to order a birth cert for him. I know Alfred was born in 1866 in Lambeth,Surrey from the 1911 census,attached below.

you dont need any other info other than the name of the person you want the cert for and the GRO ref.
Similarly when ordering a marriage cert you only need the name of one of the people.you dont need to know the spouses name

Just wanted to add to your reply Shirley that you're absolutely correct for this cert and older certs (& i'm sure you already know this) however for more recent/contemporary certs, you do need to provide more details. I just thought I'd add this in case someone looking to order a more recent cert read this and took it out of context. :)
