I have been amused by the content of this thread.
My father was named Dennis, everyone called him Den. Now, I am told that I looked like my dad from birth, so I was named Denise. But, what I really really hate is being called Den. My family (started my my nan) nick named me Niecy, which was nice, but when I went to high school at about the age of 12, one of the lads in my class called me Dee. Noone had ever called me that before, and it made sense Dee....nise. So I adopted it. Most people call me Dee now, and I loved it so much that when my first daughter was born, I gave it her as a middle name....now there is another story, cause she hates it! No pleasing some people is there??
best wishes to all
Dee

Bev if it was based around the village pub the chances are he was the 'small' one ..the nipper .

Don't know if it's in any other dialect but you used to 'nip to the shops' etc and usually these jobs came to the youngest. hence Nipper

Bev ...(shortened note) nipper is often a nickname for the younger member of the family ..as in our nipper /our kid, yorkshire dialect.

also wasn't there a thing in the RAF calling the small ones nipper because of the agility to crawl in the small space at the back of planes?? I could be wrong on that.

Hi Val with all those nicknames I am surprised you didn't get one.
gran used to be called Peggy her real name was Ethel Edith no idea why Peggy as that was usual Margaret.

Fortunately, with my name, it is only shortened to Val. A friend calls me our Val. My sister, when younger, was nicknamed Charlie as our dad looked so much like the comedian Charlie Drake (her name is Angela). My brother used to be called Twizzle (his name is Richard). A friend is called Jules (Julia). An aunt of ours was called Moggy (Margaret) never Maggie or Marg. I have found one of my ancestors called Lottie (Charlotte) and another Dolly (I think her name was Olive).

Do you like yours.

I have a few friends who are called Catherine- Katherine Catherina for heavens sake get the spelling right lol
They are called Kate, Katie, Cat . Cath/Kath, Kathy and don't ask Rina ..do not call Katie Kate but you can call her Cat ..Now Kate has to be called Kate never Katie (too young) or Cat (meow) Catherina is not Rina or Cat as you would expect but is Tinny .
confused yet?

Another name I have several friends with is Michelle they are known as Mich, Chelle and Mikey, Ma Bella . Mikey wouldn't suit Chelle at all

Strange ponderings !
